The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, gave a negative in the COVID-19 test to which he was subjected this Saturday, as he himself confirmed through a publication on his Twitter account.
“The test was negative. I have a habit of trying to be on top of the issues, to be at the scene. This is the way I understand the function of governing. In the first line. Just as thousands of Uruguayans have been doing: the health, education, police, military personnel, etc. Apologies to those with whom I had subsequent contact, “he wrote.
The president and other government authorities submitted to the tests after a head of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides), with whom they met last Monday, tested positive.
The meeting with Mides director Natalia López took place during the Uruguayan president’s visit to the border city of Rivera (north of the country) where dozens of cases were detected in recent days.
In addition to Lacalle Pou, in this instance were the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado; the Minister of National Defense, Javier García, and the president of the Administration of State Health Services, Leonardo Cipriani.
The three of them, together with the president’s personal secretary, Nicolás Martínez, were tested this Saturday and their results were also negative, as reported by the Secretary of the Presidency in a statement.
After the aforementioned meeting, both Lacalle Pou and the rest of his cabinet had maintained their agenda normally, since the positive case was known this Friday.
Even on the same Monday, the president met with former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez (2005-2010 and 2015-2020) to talk about the situation in the country and the measures being taken in the face of the health emergency.
According to the latest official data, there are 821 positive cases of COVID-19 in Uruguay and 22 deaths since March 13, when the health emergency was declared.
