The president of the Social Council of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Jesus Leon Lima, he resigned yesterday from his position, in an extraordinary plenary session, where he expressed “distrust” and “suspicion” between the body he represents and the rector Lluís Serra. For León, the space for dialogue between the two has deteriorated so much that it is “impossible to reconstruct it.” For his part, the highest representative of the ULPGC pointed out that the collaboration between them was “exquisite” until León voted in favor, in the Council of Universities, of the Degree in Medicine from the Fernando Pessoa University, whose creation was opposed by the rectors and vice-rectors of Titles of the Canary Islands and the president of the Social Council of the University of La Laguna.
León recently met with the regional councilor for Education, Universities, Culture and Sports, Manuela Armas, where he transferred his resignation. The president of the Social Council until yesterday considers that the relations between both bodies should be governed by the principles of “collaboration, coordination and loyalty”, adding that he has always been “respectful” with those principles.
“I am convinced that the relations between the Presidency of the Social Council and the Rectorate must develop in a space of trust and respect for what each represents,” he said. “A space governed by the principles of collaboration, coordination, loyalty, trust and respect for the functions and opinions of each one,” he added.
“It is difficult to maintain a relationship of respect and trust,” says Jesús León
Lluís Serra affirmed yesterday that, until the moment in which the voting of the Degree of Medicine of the Fernando Pessoa took place, the relations had been fluid. The University Council approved this degree to be studied in the center that has been installed in Guía, with the votes in favor, both from private universities and from the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands.
León did not want to delve into the reasons for his resignation in his speech at the plenary session yesterday. He considers that, in the time he has been at the institution, he has been faithful to the principles of collaboration and loyalty between both bodies, both in his time as vice president and now as president. He also believes that “discrepancies are resolved by talking and reaching agreements that must be fulfilled by those who agree to them.” It warns, however, that “when one of the parties breaches them”, in clear reference to the rector Serra, and, furthermore, “it intends that its proposals be shared without having discussed them and, above all, without knowing them”, so “It is difficult to maintain a relationship of trust and respect, because you are not sure that whoever fails to comply once will not do it again”, explains the retired teacher, a native of Fuerteventura.
“The events that have occurred have deteriorated that space for dialogue and understanding that have made, from my point of view, impossible to rebuild it,” added the former president of the Social Council, who hopes that the person who replaces him can regain good relations with him. the Rectorate.
Until the Government of the Canary Islands appoints a new president of this body, it will be Ana Suárez, current vice president, who will hold the current position.
León Lima began his work as a counselor in the Social Council of the ULPGC in 1999, in his capacity as representative for the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.
In 2005, he assumed the position of vice president of this body, accompanying Lothar Siemens (from 2005 to 2015) and, later, Ángel Tristán (from 2015 to 2019).
“The collaboration was exquisite until he voted yes to the private Medicine Degree”, argues Serra
On April 29, 2019, by agreement of the Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jesús León Lima was appointed president of the Social Council and his appointment was published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands on May 2 of that same year. On May 8, 2019, he was inaugurated as president of the ULPGC Social Council.
The Social Council of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the participation body of society in the ULPGC, which is responsible for exercising economic control and supervision of the University services. In this way, it approves the accounts so that they are fulfilled within the established deadlines, supervises the economic control, has the capacity to veto the manager, supervises the scholarships, manages the use of the land owned by the ULPGC and the urban changes in the campuses, authorizes the purchase and sale of buildings or goods, and the salaries of teachers.
In addition, it acts as an element of interrelation between society and the University, in order to ensure an adequate interconnection between academic and research activity and the intellectual, cultural, social, scientific, economic and labor needs of the Canary Islands.
The resignation of Jesús León means the second setback in a few days for the rector of the ULPGC, after forcing José Luis Trenzado to resign last Friday as vice-rector of Culture, after a teacher presented a complaint to the Institution’s Inspection for what that the rector described as “inappropriate conduct” and the ongoing investigation will show if it is a case of sexual harassment.
