The president of Mercadona announces the opening of 150 stores in Portugal



The president of Mercadona, Juan Roig, presented on Monday Mercadona's first supermarket in Portugal, which will open its doors tomorrow in Canidelo (Oporto), where it announced that they will open 150 new stores "in the coming years".

"Today is a historic day for Mercadona, because we have realized our dream of internationalizing the company in a neighboring country to which we attach important emotional and cultural bonds, such as Portugal," said Juan Roig during the presentation.

This will be the first of the ten supermarkets that Mercadona will open this year in the north of Portugal, in the districts of Oporto, Braga and Aveiro, and in 2020 they foresee the opening of another ten stores.

He also announced that they are going to create a second logistics block that will be near Lisbon, although he did not give dates.

The Spanish brand has 900 employees in Portugal, which will be 1,100 by the end of this year, and plans to invest 100 million euros this year.

This investment must be added another 160 million euros that Mercadona has allocated since 2016 to its process of internationalization in Portugal, aimed at the construction of supermarkets, the creation of a logistics center in Póvoa de Varzim and a Co-Innovation Center in Matosinhos (Oporto), where they do tests to adapt the products to the Portuguese client.

At the opening of tomorrow, next July 9 will follow the store located in Matosinhos (Oporto), in a historic building of the former Vasco da Gama Canning Factory, whose property maintains its original appearance.

On July 16 the supermarket built in Maia will be opened and a week later that of the city of Gondomar, both in the district of Oporto.

"On behalf of all of us who form Mercadona, I would like to thank Portugal for the support received to make this business milestone a reality in a country that has welcomed us from the first day with open arms, which is an example of modernity and innovation," he insisted. Juan Roig.

Since its positioning in Portugal began three years ago, Mercadona collaborates with 300 Portuguese suppliers to which it has made purchases worth 203 million euros, and in this 2019 it has planned purchases worth more than 90 million euros.

The mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Eduardo Vitor Rodrigues, today welcomed the company and expressed his "pride" for hosting the first Mercadona store in Portugal, the largest Spanish supermarket chain.

The Minister of Economy of Portugal, Pedro Siza Vieira, also attended the inauguration, who thanked Mercadona for his confidence in Portugal for the investment developed, which he announced will increase in the coming years.

As for the products of the Mercadona stores in Portugal, it will have numerous Portuguese suppliers and many will manufacture products for the supermarket's own brands.

Mercadona, which in Portugal has created the company Irmadona, has a workforce of 87,000 people and in 2018 reached sales of 24,305 million euros, 6% more than in the previous year.

The company, which made a record investment of 1,504 million in 2018, achieved a net profit of 593 million euros and distributed 325 million euros among its workforce as a bonus for objectives.
