Everything is ready for the premiere of the stage montage Clara and the abyss, the first major production that opens the 2021-2022 season at the Pérez Galdós Theater in the capital of Gran Canaria. The aforementioned work, which constitutes the first production of the second international edition of the stage experimentation initiative Galdós Laboratory, arrives at the tables of the capital coliseum on September 16, 17 and 18, in functions that will begin at 8:00 p.m.
After its premiere in the capital of Gran Canaria, Clara and the abyss It will be presented at the Ibero-American Scenic Exhibition (MEI) that is held in Tenerife on September 24 at the El Sauzal Theater. This work produced by the Pérez Galdós Theater and Unahoramenos producciones, with the sponsorship of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council (patrons of the Auditorium and Theater Foundation), the Government of the Canary Islands, and the collaboration of the Agüimes City Council and from other entities such as the SGAE Foundation, It is directed by Mario Vega and is inspired by a text by the emerging contemporary Uruguayan playwright Gabriel Calderón, with the actresses Marta Viera and Ruth Sánchez as the only protagonists.
The aforementioned production, in which the music is as relevant as the text itself, is an inspiring lesson in hope based on illness as a resource for reflection on life and death, which has a musical libretto by the Madrid singer and actor Coque Malla, who returns in this montage to musical composition for theater after his previous experiences in The Other Side of the Bed, by David Serrano, with which he obtained a nomination for the Max Awards in 2004, and after obtaining the Goya Award for Best Musical Composition for his participation in the film Champions (2018), by Javier Fesser.
The director of the montage, Mario Vega, warns that Clara and the abyss addresses the topic of cancer without talking about the disease. “She stops at the bravery of a woman who stands up to her, staring death in the eye. Its text is formulated by doing a reverse journey. It starts with Clara’s funeral to complete the reverse journey of her life for approximately 85 minutes. Clara then, with nothing to lose, tells those who are by her side and her daughters (with whom she has a difficult relationship) what she thinks of them because she has to leave with no pending accounts. Emptying yourself in a short time will be your task. Dying is as difficult as living, ”says Vega, who has condensed the montage into eleven scenes.
As in his previous productions promoted in the field of the ‘Galdós Laboratory’, Mario Vega has assumed the design of the stage space. ‘Clara y el abismo’ has an opulent set design, but at the same time very suggestive, of which Vega points out the visual pyrotechnics, very cinematographic, which he has been able to articulate with the help of Teresa Ruano and Carlos Calato, as well as a curved led screen with 103 high definition modules of 26 square meters of surface on which numerous sequences are projected that never invade or distract the actresses’ performance, but rather enhances it.
“We were clear that we did not want a montage whose language competed with the scene. We play with textures and elements of continuity that complement and contextualize the information. It is a mix between contemporary audiovisuals and theater, where the dialogue with the interpretive adds up to a machinery that also uses other surprising resources. We are not here to show off an actress, but to tell a story that has to move the viewer. We have no prejudices when it comes to using the means that modern theater puts at our disposal in order for the public to live the stage experience that we want them to enjoy.”Adds Vega.
About the experience of Galdós Laboratory that Unahoramenos has been developing since 2018, the director considers that “there is already an oiled production machinery, an aesthetic unit and a common creative language when generating content, understandable by the creators, actors and actresses and technical teams that are involved in this initiative ”, continues Vega, who anticipates that his production company has just signed a contract with the production and distribution company GG Producción Escénica, which will allow it to circulate at the end of next year through a wide network of theaters Spanish people Clara and the abyss, as well as some other of the recently promoted shows like Ana, oblivion will take us too or Moria.
It should be remembered that this work model guaranteed the success of the three theatrical productions of the previous edition, which were worthy of 10 nominations and 7 Replica Awards, 4 nominations and 1 nomination for the Max Awards and obtaining the R for recommended show by the Spanish Network of Publicly Owned Theaters and Auditoriums for the three shows directed by Mario Vega.
