Pope Francis has appointed Reverend Hency Martinez Vargas as the new bishop of the Colombian diocese of La Dorada-Guaduas (center), the Holy See said in a statement today.
The appointment comes after the pontiff accepted the resignation of the government of the diocese of Monsignor Óscar Aníbal Salazar Gómez.
Martínez Vargas (Málaga, Colombia, 1958), until now the vicar general of the diocese of his hometown, was ordained a priest in 1985 and studied Philosophy and Theology at the Major Seminary of Bucaramanga (north).
He graduated in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1994 and during his career has been parish priest, diocesan director for Catechesis and parish priest in the Most Holy Trinity of Malaga.
He has also been a teacher at the Seminar of Bucaramanga, parish priest of the cathedral and rector of the Major Seminary.
