Since March 14, when the state of alarm was officially decreed, agents have monitored a total of 415,973 web domains related to the COVID-19 with the aim of finding possible technical indications of illegal activity.

Since then, the National Police it has found 120,353 domains suspected of being used for illegal activities, or with the possibility of doing so in a very short time. For this reason, they have carried out an exhaustive analysis on those web pages and on the servers that each one pointed to.

In total, the Central Cybercrime Unit of the National Police has requested, obtained and verified the blockade of 45,773 domains and, at this time, they continue with their monitoring work in case the blockade of any of these is lifted. webs, although this possibility, as they have explained, is considered unlikely.

The number of domains will continue to increase

Regarding the remaining 74,580 domains with indications that they may be activated in the future to commit activities related to the cybercrime, the exhaustive monitoring process continues to detect its activation and proceed to its blocking.

In this sense, the National Police has pointed out that the starting number of 415,973 total monitored domains will continue to increase with the continuity of the cyber patrol work that agents will continue to do in search of this type of content.

Specifically, it is the Central Computer Security Brigade of the Central Cybercrime Unit of the National Police, which has among its functions entrusted active cyber patrols on the dark or dark web and on the surface web.

During the alarm state this activity has intensified and a concrete approach is being made towards contents related to the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19.

For its part, the National Intelligence Center explained Wednesday that there are currently more than 24,000 registered domains on the Internet that contain the terms coronavirus, coronavirus, covid19 and covid-19. Of these, more than half, 16,000, were created in the month of March.

Some of them, as they point out, have legitimate purposes and others are dedicated to carrying out spam campaigns, spear-phishing or as command and control servers. It has also been detected that some Trojans have evolved to evade detection, using news related to the coronavirus.
