Air transport within the peninsula increased in Spain by 10% last year, up to 40 million users, while AVE customers rose by 3.8%, to 21 million, according to the annual transport statistics of travelers published today at the National Institute of Statistics. Thus, the aircraft follows the trend established in 2017, when its passengers increased by 8.1% in Spain, compared to the AVE, with 3.7%. The number of travelers who used public transport exceeded 4,906 million, three percentage points more than the previous year.
The number of passengers in rail transport rose by 4.4%, maritime by 3.1% and bus by 2.6%. More than 36 million users used special and discretionary transport in December, which represents an increase of 5.9% in the annual rate. The number of passengers of special transport increases by 6.4% and exceeds 23.9 million users. Within this, the school increased by 8.5%, while the labor did not change. On the other hand, discretionary transport grew by 5% compared to the same month of 2017, with more than 12.2 million passengers.
With regard to December alone, the INE statistics show that more than 398.2 million passengers used public transport that month, 5.4% more than in the same month of 2017.
The Statistics of transport of travelers aims to provide monthly information on the number of travelers using urban transport (bus and metro), interurban (bus, rail, plane and ship) and special and discretionary bus.
