The national premiere of Galdós in love, initially scheduled for December 3 and 4, will have to be postponed for two weeks, specifically to Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18 at 8:00 p.m., and will extend to a third pass on Saturday, December 19, at the same time. This change, caused by difficulties unrelated to the production caused by the current health situation in which we find ourselves, will also force the change of date of ‘Fortunata y Benito’, the second of the plays that the Pérez Galdós Theater has scheduled this month December to close the ‘Year Galdós’ that commemorates the centenary of the death of Benito Pérez Galdós. Fortunata and Benito, initially scheduled for December 18, will take place on Sunday December 27 at 8:00 p.m.
Galdós in love is a comedy built from the relationship between Benito Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán and stars María José Goyanes and Emilio Gutiérrez Caba. The montage is a production by the Pérez Galdós Theater and the Euroscena production company, directed by Salvador Collado. The text is a production commission from the playwright Alfonso Zurro, who builds a theatrical fiction from the correspondence between these two monsters of Spanish literature; specifically, from the letters of Emilia Pardo Bazán found 50 years after the death of both and that today are kept in the House Museum of the writer in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; since of those that the novelist must have written to his lover, none are preserved. Around these circumstances the framework of the piece is woven, which does not pretend to be a biography of these two great literary personalities but rather to invent a fiction about their mutual admiration, infatuation and the historical events that they lived through that long correspondence.
Despite the difficulties encountered so far, the idea of the Pérez Galdós Theater has always been to continue with the scheduled program even if it was postponed. During this period work has continued on production and the actors have been immersed in rehearsals in Madrid. In addition, during the period of forced stage break during the quarantine, the machinists and technicians of the Pérez Galdós Theater have manufactured the scenography, according to the designs and indications of Alfonso Barajas, one of the most relevant set designers on the national theater scene. The artistic file is completed by Juan Gómez Cornejo (lighting), Luis Delgado (music), Alberto Ramos (audiovisual design) and Laura Ferrón (costumes).
Galdós enamorado has the sponsorship of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. After its premiere at the Pérez Galdós Theater, and thanks to the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands, the show will go on a tour of the Archipelago.
Fortunata and Benito
Fortunata y Benito is the second of the works that the Pérez Galdós Theater dedicates to the figure of the Gran Canaria novelist this December. The play, written and directed by Laila Ripoll, is a tribute to Galdós’s female characters from the perspective of the 21st century. Always surrounded by women and influenced by them (his mother, his sisters, his friends, his lovers …), the writer was a great creator of female characters that he endowed with flesh, character and soul. In this montage, the modernity of the Galdosian approaches is transferred to the present, to a Madrid of today, which becomes one more character in which to give life to this urban and modern version, in which music and dance are not lacking.
The LaJoven company signs the cast of this production. It is a theatrical project that unites professionals in the performing arts with the teaching community and serves as a projection space for young actors. With 8 years of life and 18 premiered productions, LaJoven seeks the incorporation of new audiences to the theater through contemporary dramaturgy. The show is part of PLATEA, the State Performing Arts program that promotes cultural dissemination in Spain.
