The music that hides the word


The paths of the artist and writer Ángel Sánchez (Gáldar, 1943) and the musician Heriberto Cruz (Santa María de Guía, 1973) crossed in February 2016 at the Antonio Padrón House Museum on the occasion of the presentation of the book Cuaderno de Campo. Cruz accepted the offer then made by César Ubierna, head of the center, to turn one of Sánchez’s texts, Mala sombra, into a song. It was the first time that Heriberto Cruz looked at Ángel Sánchez’s poetry- “There I got hooked on and many things came up,” explains Heriberto Cruz. Sánchez’s verse has haunted him ever since, and the relationship that he established with the artist has led the musician to build Songs with Ángel, an album on the Cruz dares to play a selection of texts by the author of La casa vestida and El insular sign, produced and edited by the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to the artist from Gran Canaria. The aforementioned exhibition, which brings together a selection of a hundred pieces of visual poetry by Ángel Sánchez, created from 1974 to 2019, with the curator of the historian and director of the León y Castillo House-Museum, Franck González, has allowed Cruz materialize a project that I had been looking for years ago.

The poetry of the artist from Gran Canaria Ángel Sánchez becomes music by Heriberto Cruz in Songs with Angel. A record project produced by the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) on the occasion of the retrospective offered to the 2018 Canary Islands Literature Prize until March 7. Amuleto is the first preview piece of this work that gives another perspective to Sánchez’s visual poetry.

Heriberto Cruz had published in 2013 the album Songs in oil, inspired by the painting of Antonio Padrón, which he implemented as an educational project for Primary and Secondary students between 2014 and 2017; and in 2016, he approached modernist poetry through music with Versos a tiempo, and a repertoire on texts by Saulo Torón, Alonso Quesada and Tomás Morales.

“A shock’

Ángel Sánchez was a very different company from all of the above. Mala sombra, which will be on this album, was my approach to Angel Sánchez in every way ”, recalls the musician. “I started reading his books and it was a shock, because the discursive poetry of Angel Sánchez, all his work requires a desire to observe, and I think that today’s world would need more people like Ángel Sánchez.”

Heriberto Cruz gave Sánchez a copy of his album Songs in oil “so that he could see what he was doing”, and at the same time, after two or three months, the musician received a notebook with the following title: Ten texts by Ángel Sánchez for be played by Heriberto Cruz if he wants to. There were ten original texts “on topics that we had spoken about in the couple of times that we had seen each other,” recalls Cruz. With that notebook he knocked on the door of the CAAM in search of collaboration for a show that brought together music, theater and audiovisuals. “I didn’t intend to do a regular concert,” explains Heriberto Cruz. In this case, the work of a multidisciplinary creator also had to be projected in different formats.

The CAAM could not assume this format, and so its director Orlando Britto transferred it. The Vegueta museum center had the Ángel Sánchez retrospective on the horizon, and “the proposal came to me to put some texts to music, to make a selection different from this one, in the face of a traditional album format, and that is where the history of This disc”.

The music that hides the word


The musician remembers that “I sank again in a world and in some fantastic lyrics, and it was hard work, but it has the same degree of hardness as fun and satisfaction.” It is not an easy task because, according to the review, “you have to read, select, re-read what was selected, begin to remove, some sounded to me from the beginning, other loose stanzas that you are leaving, and at the same time that you are learning from Ángel you learn about yourself, images come to you, you assume Angel’s metaphors as if they were your own, and it’s very exciting ”.

In this way he made the songs until he completed six on the album: the aforementioned Mala sombra and Amuleto are included, the latter was in the book of ten texts; an Arrorró that Sánchez wrote for his granddaughter; o Sunset version, “an instrument that we liked how it turned out in the studio.”

Songs with Ángel was recorded at Jessisma studios, in Gáldar, with Jesús Mendoza, and the complicity of the musicians David Álamo, who provided the guitar and bass arrangements, “one of the most versatile musicians on the islands in all leagues, and I’ve been lucky enough to have him on all the albums, “according to Cruz; and Jorge Soroa, on drums and percussion. Taking into account the protagonist of the album, Heriberto Cruz wanted to try the programming to complete a job in which “I have always been looking for what the text tells me, sometimes very dark and others quite light”.

Pieces to discover the author

“I have always kept in mind that what I did could have another use and that it would go a little further than a few simple songs”, reflects Heriberto Cruz. “I do not know if I have been achieving it but the projects that have come out from the first thus are directed in this line.” The musician from Gran Canaria trusts that the work on Ángel Sánchez will have a journey. “And I hope that those who do not know him or have not dared with Ángel Sánchez, do so through these songs.” | DFH
