In the film, the most personal of the works of Almodóvar, the protagonist, played by Antonio Banderas - Goya for best actor - is a filmmaker suffering from strong backaches that prevent him from facing a new shoot. The film features the performances of Penelope Cruz and Julieta Serrano. The protagonist's mother is played during different stages of her life. The cast also includes Asier Etxeandia and Leonardo Sbaraglia, who give life respectively to an actor with whom the protagonist worked in the beginning and one of his former lovers. The four interpreters were nominated in different categories of the Goya. Julieta Serrano won the award for best supporting actress.

In the 92nd edition of the Oscars, which are held early next Monday, Almodóvar aspires to reissue with Pain and glory the success he obtained in 2000 with Everything about my mother, when he won the award for Best Foreign Film. Also Banderas, who has collaborated with the filmmaker eight times, opt for a statuette for best actor. It is the first nomination for the Malaga interpreter, who got rid of praise for his mentor at the last Goya gala: “I have never met an artist with the loyalty you have to your cinema. I have learned so much from you, from the world of art and life, that I had to meet you to get here. ”
