The average price of electricity in the wholesale market has reached 83.29 euros megawatt hour (MWh), which is a historical record In our country. The previous maximum was 73.03 euros in September 2008, according to OMIE, the manager of that market.

In addition, those 83.29 euros per MWh represent a increase of almost 172% compared to the same month of 2020. The average for the first half of last year was 29.15 euros per MWh, compared to 50 euros in 2021, that is, 99.8% cheaper.

There have even been four days (15, 16, 17 and 29) in the month in which the maximum prices exceeded 100 euros per MWh.

This price represents approximately 33% of the total electricity bill of domestic consumers. In addition, the Government last week lowered the VAT from 21 to 10% for customers with a power of up to 10 kW to try to lower the final amount of the receipt for a part of the consumers.

The increase in prices in the wholesale market has been evident since last April and is mainly due to the increase in gas prices in international markets and the sharp rise in the price of CO2, which exceeds 50 euros per ton.

In the case of gas, it has shot up again in the second half of this month, with the average spot prices of European hubs rising by 11.8% to 29.02 euros / MWh, 3.07 euros / MWh more than the previous fortnight, according to GasIndustrial.
