The expansion project of Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) of New York enters its final phase. But to be able to complete the renovation, the space will have to close to the public from next June 15 until October 21. The new campus will be a "reimagining" of the presentation that makes modern and contemporary art. It will do so in a more interdisciplinary way and inspired by the experimental vision of Alfred Barr, its first director.
The expansion and renovation of the MOMA is estimated at 450 million dollars, according to the museum in a statement. The project is by the architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler. This will add more than 3,700 square meters of space. This will allow the public to show "significantly" more art than what is currently exhibited. "It's not just adding more space," says Gleen Lowry. "But space allows us to rethink the experience of art in the Museum."
The MOMA, as the director points out, is "a laboratory for the study and presentation of the art of our time". The project of renovation and expansion of the museum will allow to give new energy to that mission. To complete it, you will have to empty all the galleries during the next months and the areas where the works of art are kept. They will move to Queens. Some 6,000 pieces will be affected by this transition.
The artistic space dedicated to the exhibition currently occupies about 11,600 square meters. The curators will take advantage of the fact that they will have 30% of galleries to make pieces that have been stored for several generations emerge. This, in turn, will lead him to change the course of the show and the rhythm with which the collections will rotate. To the point that curators call it a revolution.
At the heart of the project is The Studio, which will offer programming and performances on issues and stories of modern art and the current cultural moment. An educational platform will also be opened on the second floor to connect visitors with art that explores new ideas about the present, the past and the future. The gallery at street level will connect the Museum better with the city that hosts it.
The plan is to mix paintings, sculptures, photographs and other visual aids, instead of having the works exhibited separately. The change to which the galleries will be submitted will not be done at the expense of the favorite works of the visitors, although from the museum they point out that it is possible to change the room periodically. The MOMA It is visited every year by 2.7 million people.
From the museum it is explained that the reconfiguration of the galleries and the new way of presenting the permanent collection will, in turn, show works by Latin, Asian and African-American artists. Consider that these minorities should be recognized in today's multicultural society. The renewal of MOMA started three years ago, by the east wing. This summer the west will be completed.
