The Metropolitan Museum of New York (Met), one of the most important cultural institutions in the world, announced this Tuesday in a statement that it plans to reopen its doors in mid-August, “or perhaps a few weeks later”, while confirmed the definitive cancellation of this year’s Met Gala, which until now had been postponed indefinitely.
“Initially, the days and opening hours of the Met will likely be reduced, and given the need to provide an environment that respects social distancing, the museum will not hold tours, concerts or events for the rest of 2020,” notes the text.
The museum is expected to return to normal activities in 2021, at which time they also hope to celebrate its 150th anniversary, which was this year and which was to commemorate with the opening of the “Making the Met” exhibition, which was to open a few days after New York implemented measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“The Met has been through a lot in its 150 years and today remains a beacon of hope for the future. This museum is also a deep remembrance of the strength of the human spirit and the power that art has to comfort, inspire and unite communities, “said the institution’s president, Daniel Weiss.
The museum also announced the definitive cancellation “due to the global health crisis” of the 2020 Met Gala, the most anticipated fashion event of the year, which was initially to be held on May 4 and which had been postponed without giving a new date.
The Met Gala, which in this edition was intended to review a century and a half of fashion with its theme “About Time: Fashion and Duration”, is used annually to raise funds to finance the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum, and last year He managed to raise, according to Vogue magazine, about 15 million dollars.
He was attended without fail by the great stars of the entertainment world, and by 2020 he would have the actors Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Lin-Manuel Miranda as his hosts in what was going to mean the premiere of Streep at the big party.
Although the Met Gala is not going to be held this year, it will be able to see the exhibition that normally opens parallel to the luxurious event, and that this time will open its doors on October 29 until February 7, 2021.
The Met calls itself the largest museum in the world, both physically, with 186,000 square meters, and financially, since it has an annual budget of 320 million dollars, while it usually receives more than 7 million visitors to the year.
