The International Festival of Classical Theater of Mérida will celebrate its 65th edition this summer with a marked inclusive character that will allow that in its first show, the opera "Sansón y Dalila", more than 400 people form a choir composed of groups of the disability or representatives of the gypsy town.
The director of the Festival emeritense, Jesus Cimarro, presented this Wednesday at a press conference the schedule for this year's edition, accompanied by the president of the Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, and many of the protagonists who will step this summer the arena of the Roman Theater, among them Concha Velasco, Rafael Amargo or Víctor Ullate, which premieres in Mérida.
Cimarro has insisted that he has designed a program "for all", consisting of six plays, all of them premieres, two dance shows and an opera, which can be seen in the sand from June 27 to 25. August.
The festival will start with three performances of the opera "Sansón y Dalila", directed by Paco Azorín, with live music by the Extremadura Orchestra and the presence on stage, representing the people of Israel, of more than 400 people from associations of disability as Full Inclusion, the ONCE or Down Extremadura, and associations such as the Secretariat of the Gypsy People.
It is, according to Cimarro, "a challenge" with which the emerging festival will try to enter the Guinness Book of Records, since "there have never been so many people on a stage", in this case to shape the figure of the Greco-Latin choir.
The second production "Old friend Cicero" will again bring to Merida, with this unpublished text by Ernesto Caballero, Mario Gas, who will direct José María Pou, Bernat Quintana and Miranda Gas in this montage that will be on stage from July 3 to 7 .
The most international bet of the festival will take place from 10 to 14 July with "Pericles, prince of Tire" by Willian Shakespeare, a co-production of the Mérida Festival with Iberescena, the International Festival of Performing Arts of Uruguay and the Mercosur Festival of Argentina , under the direction of Hernán Gené, who also integrates the cast with Ana Fernández or José Troncoso.
Along with the opera, this edition also bets on the dance of the hand of Rafael Amargo and his "Dionisio", on July 16 and 17; and the "Antigone" with which Víctor Ullate premieres in Mérida, from July 19 to 21, in a cast starring Lucía Lacarra and Josué Ullate.
In addition, Lluis Homar will return to the Roman Theater, from July 24 to 28, with the "Prometheus" of Esquilo in a version of the poet Luis García Montero, directed by José Carlos Plaza and also starring Amaia Salamanca, Fran Perea and Alberto Iglesias.
On the last day of July, the 31st, will be released "Metamorfosis", by Mary Zimmerman, which will allow Concha Velasco to fulfill her dream, as she has acknowledged herself, of returning to her 80 years to Mérida, under the direction of David Serrano and along with Pepe Viyuela, Edu Soto, Adrián Lastra and Secun de la Rosa.
The last two weeks of the Festival will be dedicated to Extremadura's contribution with the musical "La Corte del Faraón", an adaptation of Juana Escabia and Ricard Reguant, directed by the latter and starring Itziar Castro and Paco Arrojo; and with Teatro del Noctámbulo, which will stage "Tito Andrónico" by Shakespeare, directed by Antonio C. Guijosa and headed in its cast by José Vicente Moirón.
To all this programming is added the Roman theaters of Medellín and Régina (Badajoz) and Cáparra (Cáceres) and other spaces of the city of Mérida, where the Off Programming will be developed with more theater, cinema, conferences, exhibitions, workshops or pasacalles and that this year also includes the representation of the comedy "Aphrodite", by the Canarian company Antigone, integrated with people with visual disabilities.
Cimarro stressed that the Festival de Mérida, "the longest in Spain and one of the most important in the world," reaches its retirement age, 65, full of strength, because as his motto says this year, in Merida " the emotion is eternal. "
