The electronic prescription works for the first time in all Spain, although incompletely, since Monday, after joining Madrid, the only autonomous community that was missing, to the national interoperable system. The people of Madrid can now buy medicines at any pharmacy in Spain by presenting their health card. However, Spaniards traveling to Madrid will not be able to access this service until the next few weeks, as pharmacies in the region will be incorporated "soon and progressively" into the system, according to the regional government.
This type of prescription, which allows the physician to issue and transmit prescriptions in a digital manner, carries more than a decade in operation in Spain, but until 2015 it was only used to withdraw medicines in pharmacies in the community of origin of the patient. That year the National system of health launched a project to allow pharmaceutical dispensing in other regions without the need for a paper prescription.
The common system of personal identification is centralized in the Ministry of Health, which collects information from all the health cards of the communities and assigns each person a unique identification code for the National Health System. This code allows to link all the health information of a person generated in any health service, regardless of the place of origin of the card or the different formats that they have in each community that issues it.
Recipes from hospitals
In addition, in the Community of Madrid medicines prescribed in hospitals can be purchased directly in pharmacies with the health card, without having to go through the health center before to obtain the prescription.
This is possible thanks to the so-called Single Prescription Module, a computer tool launched in the Community last September, which allows any professional to have the history of a patient's prescription in pharmacy.
It is underway in all primary care centers, hospitals, specialty centers of the Madrid Health Service, including emergency services, as well as in residences of the Madrid Social Care Agency (AMAS). The system, as reported by the regional government, will be available "soon" in the Summa 112.
