"The little notebook... it would be better to be able to stop it"

The general secretary of the PP between 2008 and 2018, María Dolores de Cospedal, stated in a conversation with Commissioner Villarejo in 2013 that “it would be better” to be able to “stop” the publication in the media of Luis Bárcenas’ “little book”, as revealed on Monday by El Paísin reference to those known as 'Bárcenas papers' in the that the existence of a box B in the match was proven. The conversation took place on January 20, 2013, after the first publication on January 18 in El Mundo of the existence of bonuses in black for years in the conservative formation.

In the dialogue, which Commissioner Villarejo recorded, the then general secretary of the PP — a party that was in government at the time — tries to find out who appears in Bárcenas' documentation as a recipient of bonuses, find out who is leaking it and try to stop his publication. The recordings were in the commissioner's home and were seized by court order within Operation Tandem.

Cospedal asks José Manuel Villarejo if he thinks they are going to publish the “little book” and he affirms that “[Eduardo] Inda is telling whoever wants to hear it”, according to the audios published by El País this Monday. “But to me the famous little notebook that he says is such, what he has told me is that he has photocopies of some sheets that the other has shown him, that the lawyer has not given them to him. In other words, you don't have the little notebook physically, eh? Not even Inda, I think, from what he's told me. That he goes around telling things? It is that he is a big mouth, ”says the commissioner. Both agree that the best thing is for Villarejo to try to anticipate what may happen: "As far as possible, intoxicate them a little, anticipate the issue," he says.

The general secretary of the PP says, at the end of that dialogue on January 20, that "the little book... it would be better to be able to stop it." "That is. No, no, don't worry, I'm going to be on the lookout”, replies Villarejo. And he continues:

— (Villarejo) And now, whatever you say, but I would be in favor of... this guy, the bastard of the bastard, you have to laminate him, eh?

— (Cospedal) No, no, I have it clearer than water. I have not the slightest doubt.

— (Villarejo) Anything that involves putting hot cloths on it right now is a mistake, eh?

— (Cospedal) I have not the slightest doubt.

The fear of María Dolores de Cospedal is fulfilled little more than a week after that conversation. On January 31, 2013, the manuscripts were published in El País where the former treasurer of the party registered a parallel accounting between 1990 and 2009, with the detail of the periodic amounts that the party leaders received as a bonus.

Change paragraphs in police reports

The National Court opened a separate piece of the Gürtel case to investigate the case. Cospedal speaks again with Villarejo when the police, at the request of the judge, begin to prepare reports on the Bárcenas documents, according to the audio of April 26, 2013 published by El País. Both speak of changing paragraphs of the reports that come out of the Ministry of the Interior to the National High Court.

The police officer responsible for the Gürtel and Caja B investigations was Chief Inspector Manuel Morocho. Morocho told the magistrate instructing Kitchen in June 2021 that there were police officers who tried to sabotage his work during the mandate of Jorge Fernández Díaz in the Ministry of the Interior, the politician whom Morocho was at the forefront of the attempts to remove him from the investigation. The inspector also recounted how Commissioner José Luis Olivera, former head of the UDEF, became a double agent in favor of those under investigation.

Both are mentioned in the dialogue between Cospedal and Villarejo, who says that he went with his "friend" José Luis [Olivera] to have a drink and have dinner with the Morocho de los cojones“. ”And then José Luis was left alone with this man, eating his jar because in the report it even went to the name of the president, I don't know if you know it“, he explains to Cospedal.
