The lava from the deepest deposit of the La Palma volcano «loosens»

The scientific committee predicts that the deeper reservoirs “are getting smaller” based on the ratio of carbon and sulfur that is present in the volcanic plume, in addition to the reduction of earthquakes and the stability of the surface. «With the geochemical data, we have another coincidence [junto a los sismos y la deformación del terreno] that the magma that feeds the eruption perhaps resides more superficially ”, explained López during the press conference held yesterday at the headquarters of the Cabildo de La Palma. In other words, the lava that the different cones now expel comes, possibly, from the deposit that is located around 15 kilometers deep.

“The eruptive dynamics is still intense (..) we have to be cautious”, indicates Carmen López

The decrease in seismicity to which the scientist referred has been recorded since last Thursday, especially in terms of number and to a lesser extent in intensity. However, last Sunday two major tremors were located only eight seconds apart: the first of them had a magnitude of 4.6 mbLg and 37 kilometers deep, while the second was 4.5 to 38 kilometers. Both were felt by the population of La Palma with an intensity IV -widely observed-. Yesterday, the maximum power movement occurred at 5:51 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.7, at a depth of 14 kilometers and intensity III -weak-.

Hectares affected

  • The area affected by the volcano increased last Sunday by another hectare more until it reached 984, as reported yesterday by the Pevolca technician, Francisco Prieto.

The other parameter named by López was that of the deformation of the terrain, after an elevation of 9 centimeters was detected between November 3 and 6 at the station located in the town of Jedey, the closest to the volcano. These bulges of the surface are related to the presence of greater amount of magma that pushes the earth’s crust in its attempt to get out. “It is the reflection that the eruptive dynamics is still intense”, that “we have to be cautious and we still have to wait to be able to say that these trends are sufficient in time” to predict the possible beginning of the end of the eruption, said the spokeswoman for the scientific committee. The vertical deformation was reversed last Sunday.

The tremor is at the lowest level since the stoppage in September, 44 days ago

Added to the positive data is the noise made by the magma as it rises through the reservoir pipes to the surface, the so-called tremor, which during the last two days “has decreased substantially” to “low-medium” levels, indicated the Geographical Institute. Nacional (IGN) in its daily report. And it is that yesterday it reached about 22 ampere units, the lowest figure since the surprise temporary stop of the volcano occurred, which for four hours went into hibernation and then reactivated with enough virulence. That happened on September 27, 44 days ago. In this way, the downward trend of this indicator since the beginning of this month is consolidated.

Destroyed buildings

  • The Cadastre data was modified yesterday to increase the number of destroyed homes by 11 and reduce the number of industrial buildings by 3. Thus, the number of properties affected is 1,452.

The sulfur dioxide present in the gas and ash column, likewise, continues with a progressive decrease since last September 29, when the satellites recorded maximum peaks exceeding 50,000 tons. On the other hand, the optical sensors used to measure this gas in the plume from close up recorded last Sunday that the emission continued to be “high”, with between 16,600 and 23,100 tons, still far from the less than 1,000 that would advance the end of the eruptive process.

  • There are 510 people staying in hotels and health centers. Of these, 467 are in hotel complexes in Fuencaliente and Los Llanos, and 43 are dependents.

A process that continues to be active, with the continuous emission of lava that runs west over already formed languages and without causing further damage. The technician of the Cabildo de La Palma, Francisco Prieto, pointed out that the flows remain “quite stable”, with contributions of lava to the original one that ends in the fajana and the so-called number 5, which is located in the vicinity of the Todoque mountain. , without this being translated into new advances. Thus, the area affected by lava has hardly increased during the last two days. Although last Sunday no changes were reported with respect to the previous day, yesterday the increase was 1.4 hectares. Pevolca estimates that there are already 984 hectares buried by lava, while the maximum width between flows is 3,100 meters.

The languages that are at the doors of the church of La Laguna and the last one that was formed, further south, and which threatens to bury the LP-211 highway (Todoque – Las Manchas), one of the only two roads, continue to be a concern. access to the tourist town of Puerto Naos. If this last scenario finally becomes a reality, it would make it difficult for the island of the irrigators of the banana plantations and of the workers of the two desalination plants that provide water to these plantations to reach this point. Faced with this possible situation, the Navy has already planned the transfer of farmers from the Tazacorte dock to the beach of this Llanense neighborhood in four boats with capacity for 80 people each.

The paralysis of the different fronts has led to hardly any new damage to buildings being registered. The update of the Cadastre, on the other hand, indicated yesterday an increase of another eight destroyed buildings by including 11 houses, reaching 1,117 during the entire eruptive process, and reducing those for industrial use by 3 to 67. In total, 1,452 buildings have been affected by the passage of volcanic flows, according to Prieto.

As there is no increase in the affected area or new evictions, the number of people housed has not changed in recent hours. In total there are 510, of which 467 are staying in hotel establishments. Of these, 400 are staying at the Princess hotel in Fuencaliente and 67 in Los Llanos de Aridane. In addition, there are 43 dependent people cared for in insular health centers.
