The lava flow from the La Palma volcano that has devastated part of the La Laguna neighborhood widens and the others are reactivated with more lava

The lava spills that have occurred in the last hours by the reconfiguration of the eruptive centers of the La Palma volcano they have broadened the laundry that worries the most right now, the one that has remained standing in the neighborhood of La Laguna.

In parallel, the scientific committee of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) has found a greater irrigation of lava to the rest of the flows, mainly through volcanic tubes, especially in the original one, which formed the fajana, which could be receiving input directly from one of those tubes.

The technical director of Pevolca, Miguel Angel Morcuende, has specified that the broadening of the stream further to the northwest is due to those spills caused by partial ruptures of the secondary cone, especially in the area near Tacande.

He has also indicated that in La Laguna “almost a meter has not advanced” in the last 24 hours, and that they are still pending the possible advance of this language, whether to the north or south of the homonymous mountain.

What is “desirable”, he said, is that the second option, since would prevent more damage to the homes, and it is that the volcano has already destroyed 1,030 since it began to erupt on September 19. In case of following the course of the troughs, what would affect the most would be banana farms.

The number of evacuees exceeds 7,000 and that of relocated in hotels, or social health centers in the case of dependents, rises to 463.

The measurement carried out yesterday Friday of the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) associated with the volcanic plume reached values of 31,600 tons, which accounts for the vigor of the eruptive process.

The person in charge of the volcanic surveillance network of the National Geographic Institute (IGN), Carmen López, has indicated about the decline in deep seismicity that it is necessary to wait several days to be able to speak of a downward trend in this parameter.

If so, he explained, it would follow a pattern that has already happened in the eruption of the underwater Tagoro volcano in El Hierro, ten years ago.

First, the deep seismicity disappeared, then the intermediate one, and after the weeks other parameters of the geochemical network and the deformations improved.

López has explained that in the case of the La Palma eruption, “some features” are being observed, such as the decline in deep seismicity, but “it is too early to predict that it will be continued.”

Regarding the emission of carbon dioxide, he has indicated that a downward trend should be confirmed that “does not yet have”, and added that the values of the last days are still “high” and that they should be “significantly lower” for think about the end of the eruptive process.

The latest report from the Pevolca scientific committee highlights that the effect of the thermal inversion (from 3 to 4 degrees Celsius) is between 1,500 to 2,000 meters and that the local wind regime in El Paso, Los Llanos and Tazacorte are producing an area convergence that is favoring the accumulation of SO2 in that basin.

According to the air quality, with regard to sulfur dioxide (SO2), since last night high concentration values have been registered in the Los Llanos, El Paso, Tazacorte and Puntagorda stations.

The hourly average values have increased significantly during the last hours of the morning and the first hours of the morning, so that, in the case of Los Llanos, at 9:00 hours the third consecutive hourly value of concentration was registered above of the 500 units per cubic meter, which is the reference value of the alert threshold for the population.

During this period, the values recorded at the Tazacorte and El Paso stations have also recorded hourly averages higher than this value.

Although they have not done so for three consecutive hours, it is considered that there is a risk of reaching these levels, so the circumstances would arise to alert the population of the Aridane Valley.

With regard to particles smaller than 10 microns (PM10), yesterday concentrations lower than previous days were generally observed, without exceeding the daily threshold (established at 50 units / cubic meter), in any of the stations. the air quality network. -The height of the ash and gas column, measured today, reaches 3,000 meters.

The current arrangement of the ash cloud and SO2 is to the southwest of the eruptive focus and is expected to be available to the west / northwest in the next few hours.

The expected position of the plume represents a favorable scenario for aeronautical operations.

They have registered rainfall generally weak in character on the north and east slopes of La Palma and these rains, between weak and locally moderate, will continue to be probable for the remainder of Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Mainly the precipitations will be registered in the north and east slopes, as well as in the interior and west areas.
