The “La Caixa” Foundation makes available to the sick by Coronavirus and their relatives throughout Spain at 230 professionals (psychologists, social workers, nurses, doctors and pastoral agents), who develop the program for Comprehensive Care for People with Advanced Diseases, framed in the Palliative Care Strategy of the National Health System.
The objective is that the professionals of the program provide those affected by Covid-19 warm, personalized and emotional, social and spiritual care, to complement the work of the medical units, and also offer attention to mourning in extreme circumstances such as those of the relatives of the victims of the pandemic.
Distributed in a a network of 43 Psychosocial Care Teams (EAPS), the professionals will work in the Coronavirus units of the 129 hospitals throughout Spain, And in the 133 Home Support units where they normally work taking care of people who are at the end of life and their relatives.
The President of the “la Caixa” Banking Foundation, Isidro Fainé, Has expressed: “all of us must contribute to mitigate the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and make its effects more bearable. The psychosocial care of people affected by such an unknown situation and the support, both for them and their families, is intended to be a seed of hope consistent with our mission to help to the most vulnerable people at all times. “
Along the its 11 years of travel, this program of the “la Caixa” Foundation has provided care to 182,000 patients and 248,000 relatives. The Council of Europe distinguishes it as an exemplary service in psychological, spiritual and emotional care.
The scientific evaluation of the program concludes that the psychosocial care offered responds to the needs and improves the symptoms caused by the disease in 90% and that they harm the mental and psychological state of the patients treated. The study establishes that 92% of sick people rate the care received as excellent or very good, and close to 90% assure that they have been able to resolve difficult issues (most of them, communication and relationships with the family and the environment) thanks to this support.
