The Kings Felipe Vi and Letizia, accompanied by the princess Eleanor and the Infanta Sofia receive this Friday in audience the winners of the ‘Medals of Asturias 2021’, the patron members of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, the winners of the Princess of Asturias Awards 2021. The presidents of the jury and the members of the Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees and the winners of the End of Career Awards 2019/2020 of the University of Oviedo will also attend the ceremony that will be held from noon.
Ceremony at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo
The monarchs also preside over the delivery ceremony of the Princess of Asturias Awards, which this year distinguish, among others, seven scientists for their role in the development in record time of some of the vaccines against covid.
In addition to the recipients of the Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, the feminist journalist and writer will receive their diploma Gloria Steinem (Communication and Humanities); the chef, businessman and philanthropist José Andrés (Concordia) or Teresa Perales (Sports).
The list of winners in this XLI edition is completed on writer and screenwriter Emmanuel Carrère (Lyrics), the Serbian artist Marina Abramovic (Arts), the NGO Campaign for Female Education (International Cooperation) and the economist Amartya sen (Social Sciences), the only winner who will be absent due to medical prescription.
The solemn ceremony will return to its traditional stage of the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo after the pandemic last year forced it to be transferred to the Hotel de la Reconquista to be held without an audience, although with a capacity limited to 60 percent of the 1,313 available seats.
In addition to the traditional King’s speech, Princess Eleanor will be heard again, who has traveled to Oviedo from the boarding school in Wales where he has been studying since the end of August, and will thus add his third intervention in the ceremony after opening in 2019 at the age of 13, the same as his father had in 1981 when, in the same place, he spoke for the first time.
