The Jury finds the accused guilty of killing his ex-partner in La Laguna

He Jury court found guilty of the murder of Maria Soledad Bobet in January 2019 during a fire in a car in La Laguna a his ex-partner, Juan Carlos Afonso Barrera.

This was just announced in the reading of the verdict in Section V of the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The members of the Jury consider it proven that on the day of the events, January 16, 2019, the accused was driving with the victim in the latter’s car from the municipality of Santa Úrsula to La Laguna. And, upon arriving near the soccer field attached to the La Manzanilla stadium, the aforementioned individual, a neighbor of Barrio Nuevo, doused the woman with gasoline and then lit the fire.

The surprise with which the individual acted prevented Marisol from having the option of escaping and, by becoming a “human torch”, she died amidst great pain and suffering.

The delegate prosecutor for Gender Violence in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui, requested a 28-year prison sentence, for the crimes of murder with treachery and cruelty, material damage and animal abuse. In addition, the Public Ministry claimed compensation of 120,000 euros for the mother of the victim, as well as 60,000 euros for each of the siblings. He has also been sentenced to pay the value of the burned vehicle, about 6,500 euros.
