The judge of the National Court José de la Mata has agreed to open an oral trial in the last piece, and the main one, of the ‘Gürtel’ case against a total of 26 individuals, including the leader of the plot, Francisco Correa, and his right-hand man, Pablo Crespo, on whom he imposes the payment of bonds in the form of fines of up to 33.6 million euros.
The Supreme Court ratifies the condemnation of the PP for profiting from the Gürtel plot
The head of the Central Court of Instruction number 5 also sends 20 legal persons to trial as subsidiary civil liable for this piece related to alleged tax crimes for which the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office requests another 77 years in prison for the leaders of the Gürtel.
It is the last piece that remains under investigation, except for a part of those known as ‘Bárcenas papers’, which was reopened in March 2017 and is still being investigated.
In this case, on the one hand, crimes against the Public Treasury that Correa and Crespo may have committed due to the concealment of assets have been investigated, “in large part allegedly originating from illicit activities investigated in separate pieces”, says the judge, and on the other, the strategy developed by both of concealment and laundering of the income from said activities.
