The Italian baritone Leo Nucci chairs the Alfredo Kraus Singing Competition

Possessing a brilliant career in the best theaters and concert halls in the world, Nucci has recordings that have made history, and its appropriate artistic media have allowed it to be still current. For some years now, he has also faced the training of new generations.

As members of the jury, the representatives of the collaborating theaters intervene: Daniel Bianco (director of the National Theater of La Zarzuela in Madrid), Anton Gradsak (casting director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theater in Florence) and Elisabete Matos (artistic director of the Theater of São Carlos de Lisboa). They are joined by Alessandro Galoppini (casting director of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan), Celestino Varela (general and artistic director of the Oviedo Opera), Ulises Jaén (general and artistic director of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Opera) and two honorary members: Guillermo García-Alcalde and Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo.

As in the last two editions, the presidency of the contest will be assumed by Rosa Kraus Ley and the general direction and secretariat will be in charge of Mario Pontiggia, artistic director of the Foundation and the Contest.

Regarding the registration and venues of the tests, the VIII Alfredo Kraus International Singing Contest is open to singers without distinction of nationality, with ages between 18 and 32 years old for the voices of soprano, countertenor and tenor and between 18 and 35 years for the voices of mezzo-soprano, alto, baritone, bass-baritone and bass.

Those interested should formalize their registration using a digital form that they can download on the competition website ( Registration closes are as follows: May 15 (Madrid), May 19 (Florence), June 5 (Lisbon) and June 28 (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).

The Preliminary Tests will be held at the National Theater of La Zarzuela in Madrid (May 26 and 27), at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theater in Florence (May 30 and 31), at the São Carlos Theater in Lisbon ( June 16 and 17) and at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (September 17 and 18). Candidates will be evaluated by a panel made up of the president and the artistic director of the Foundation and the Contest, as well as representatives of the collaborating institutions that host each test.

Contestants will be eligible for prizes in three large categories


The Semifinals (September 20 and 21) and Final (September 25) will take place in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, an iconic building inaugurated by the tenor himself in 1997. In these two cases, the contestants will be evaluated by the jury. The final test that precedes the awards will take place in a public gala that will feature a performance by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria, conducted by maestro Oliver Díaz.

Contestants will be eligible for attractive prizes. The three Official Awards -of 14,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros respectively, plus a medal and diploma-, as well as the Public Award -of 2,500 euros plus a diploma-, are part of the important financial endowment provided by the high patronage of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
