Sergio Estévez inaugurates the new exhibition season of the Mapfre Guanarteme Foundation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria next September 12, at 8:00 p.m., with his artistic proposal Paper and more, in which it surprises with its lightness, games of volumes, lights and shadows that are generated between the material of the work and the space that surrounds it, inside container boxes that highlight the prominence of each piece.
The exhibition brings together a selection of works, sculptures and installations, created from paper, cardboard and methacrylate plates, in which each layer dialogues with the previous one, complementing it and returning to its importance with respect to the previous one. Sets of sheets of paper creating a strong sculptural presence that floats freely in space or rests on the plane. The power it acquires the light in this work he manages to make the holes and their corners hide something that the spectator has the mission to discover and reminds him that «not always what we see is real.
In this project, selected in the call for exhibition projects of the Foundation Mapfre Guanarteme for 2019, Estévez delves into an idea that has been around for years, largely due to the saturation of images in our days in contemporary art. In Paper and more virgin and pure paper, the surrounding air and emptiness form the cornerstone of creation. The absence of the image, the white of the paper, the transparency of the methacrylate and the dialogue between planes and layers make the material the only protagonist.
The exhibition will remain open to the public in the Hall of the Foundation on Castillo Street, 6, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, until October 31, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
