Gran Canaria PRO 2022 will bring together
the best stand up paddle surf race (SUP race) athletes this Saturday, June 18, in Playa del Ingles. More than 75 national and international athletes will compete in the different categories of the event, which will be the fifth in the international SUP race EuroTour circuit.

The competition will feature the participation of great professionals in this discipline, such as
Duna Gordillo, champion of Spain in 2022; Daniel Hasulyo, gold medalist at the International Surfing Association World Cup in 2018, and Esperanza Barreras, world champion in the SUP Long Distance and Beach Race categories in 2019.

The presentation of this event took place this morning at the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resorts & Spa hotel and was attended by the director of SecondReef, Eduardo Díaz; the Councilor for Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Francisco Castellano, the Councilor for Sports of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the current leader of the EuroTour circuit in the Sub 10 category, Noah Díaz.

In addition, Díaz has pointed out that «what differentiates this competition is its modality, in which both speed and skill in the waves will be valued, so that
heAthletes can score points in the EuroTour». This competition is the fifth round of the international circuit, which has already passed through Italy, Portugal, Mallorca and Alicante.

For his part, the Councilor for Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Francisco Castellano, has pointed out "the importance of local schools organizing events of this relevance and, above all, that they bet on the base, training the little ones, to promote Canarian athletes to the international scene.

Likewise, the Councilor for Sports of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Samuel Henríquez, has pointed out the suitability of the beaches of the municipality «
to enjoy a unique enclave which brings together great athletes from all over the world». Likewise, he has valued the combination between sport and tourism, "to promote Gran Canaria as one of the best destinations for practicing sports."

The Gran Canaria PRO 2022 is divided into the
Juniors, Amateurs, Master and Elite categories, and will have several qualifying tests, in which the combination of speed and skill in the waves will be valued. Depending on the category, the races will have different routes. The Sub 10 and 12 groups will travel 1.5 kilometers, while in the Elite, Master and Sub 18 categories they will have to complete a 2 kilometer circuit. In the case of the Sub 14, Sub 16 and Amateur categories, the athletes will sail 3 kilometers.

The day before the event, in
hours from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.the welcome ceremony will take place, in which the numbers will be delivered, the boards will be left at the starting point and the routes will be explained.

More than fifty national and international athletes of the stature of the brothers Leonard and Claudio Nika, who add numerous successes at European and world level, will compete in the event. In addition, the school is committed to grassroots sports, since it considers that it is of the utmost importance for any discipline. In this sense, the Canarian talent will be represented by young promises that have stood out from this center, such as Noah Díaz, 9 years old, and Elisa López, 12 years old, who have reached the
top 3 of the Cup of Spain under 10 and under 12respectively.

The objective of this SUP race championship is to bet on outdoor sport that promotes an active, youthful and autonomous lifestyle, this being a unique opportunity to get closer to supporting the numerous athletes, high-level professionals at the national level. and international.

The organization invites the population of Gran Canaria and fans to attend the event in order to support this sport, which is in full growth. Likewise, Second Reef undertakes, once the tests have been held, to
complete cleaning of the beach and the execution of the actions precise to ensure its complete conservation.

SecondReef was born in Gran Canaria in 2009 and since then it has had more than 2,000 students. The instructors, approved by the Spanish Surfing Federation (FESURF), have the
commitment to guide athletes towards a safer understanding and talented of the ocean. One more year, the school organizes this event in which young athletes, amateurs and professionals come together in a show that puts Gran Canaria at the center of SUP racing.
