The Government has approved today in the Council of Ministers the 2% salary increase for officials. This measure, together with the 0.9% increase in pensions approved last week, was one of Pedro Sánchez's priorities once he was inaugurated president. The increase will be retroactive, effective from January 1, and will cost 3,264 million euros to public coffers. Thus, in two weeks of government, public spending has increased by 4.6 billion. In the press conference after the Minister's Council, the Government spokeswoman and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, highlighted in relation to this proposal the importance of the "recovery of labor rights."

Despite its retroactive nature, the salary increase of officials will not arrive on the January payroll, since there is no material time to include it, but formulas will be sought to be paid as soon as possible. It will benefit the three million public employees in Spain: as a cascading effect, what is approved by the State has repercussions on the salaries of the officials of autonomous communities, local administrations and public companies. To this will be added the 0.3 points of rise in the wage bill that are still pending approval of its distribution to prioritize concepts such as salary equalization or productivity.

How advanced this newspaper, the Executive had been preparing a decree-law for months that includes an increase of 2% for this year as included in the multiannual agreement signed by unions and administrations under the baton of the Executive of Mariano Rajoy in 2018. The rule will invoke reasons of "urgent need" to approve the hike. Already in 2018 the Government of Sánchez did something similar in the last Council of Ministers of the year, when it approved the increase of 2.25% fixed that occurred last year.

It has also approved the update of deliveries to accounts for this 2020, although on a provisional basis, since it has to be collected in the General Budgets that the Government expects to present in March and approve them in summer. The Government had to postpone its update last year until autumn when it was in office and did not have a new Budget approved. «For the first time they were updated without a draft Budget. Today they are extended so that it is possible to pay and providers can start charging and administrations reduce their debts, ”said Montero.

Specifically, the regions will receive a total amount of 103,000 million euros. They will also receive 10,955 million for the year of 2018, 4,833 million more than the previous year. "These deliveries to accounts have been calculated so that public services benefit from economic growth when there is an extension situation," Montero explained.
