The Government maintains contacts with the different political groups to assess the request for a possible further extension of the state of alarm, although, for the moment, it has not taken any decision in this regard.
“We have held conversations, meetings, and exchanges of opinion with the different political groups” to analyze this issue, on which the final decision will be adopted based on the epidemiological evolution of the pandemic, said the spokesperson for the Executive, María Jesús Montero, at a press conference after the Council of Ministers.
In the event that it is agreed to request a new extension, it will be communicated by normal means, he added, referring to the usual weekend appearances of the president, Pedro Sánchez.
Montero has made it clear that the Government will request, if it deems it necessary, to maintain what it considers to be the only instrument that has been shown to be effective in fighting this pandemic, the state of alarm.
“Health is above any other issue,” said the minister before specifying that no decision has yet been made in this regard and stressing that it will be Sánchez who communicates what is agreed at the time, most likely tomorrow, Saturday .
If a new extension is requested, it would be the sixth since the state of alarm was declared on March 14. The one currently in progress expires on June 7.
