The Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, has approved a royal decree to grant the second and last extension to the concession of the Casablanca oil platform for 10 more years, after Repsol has fulfilled all the technical requirements and administrative for approval.
Located off the coast of Tarragona, Casablanca is the only oil platform in Spain. The hydrocarbon exploitation concession of the plant was granted by a royal decree of 1978 for a period of 30 years, with two additional periods of 10 years each.
The current production of oil in the Casablanca platform is around 2,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. It supposes an approximate value – at today's prices, around 60 dollars per barrel – of 40 million euros.
The extension means that investments of close to 150 million euros will be made during the last 10 years of extension of the concession and the maintenance of 120 jobs. To this we must add the set of activities in the area of transport, logistics or supplies that are generated around the facility, which represents a driving activity, especially in the Baix Ebre and Montsià districts.
The platform generates business activity and service contracts, especially in the counties of Tarragona, worth 16 million euros per year. Of these, seven million euros correspond to the hiring of companies and services in the Tarragona region (logistics, fuel purchase, catering, customs service, warehouse management and purchase of all types of materials, mainly).
