The generation of clean energy grows in El Salvador

The generation of "clean and renewable energies" in El Salvador grew by 11.4 percentage points between 2014 and 2018 due to the diversification of the national energy matrix, the Central American government reported today.

The generation of this type of energy went from occupying 52.3 percent of "the installed energy capacity" to 63.7 percent, said the Executive of Salvador Sánchez Cerén.

"This achievement has been possible thanks to the advances in the diversification of the national energy matrix, with the introduction of sources such as solar, wind, biomass, biogas and hydraulics," he said.

He explained that this situation "has allowed the total installed capacity of the electricity sector has increased from 1,586.8 megawatts in 2014 to 2,084.5 megawatts in 2018, representing an increase of 31.4 percent."

The source added that the country is in the process of building more wind, solar and natural gas power plants to "add another 624.2 megawatts to the installed capacity in the 2019-2021 period."

According to the Government, a natural gas plant in the western town of Acajutla, with a capacity of 380 megawatts, will begin operations in 2021 and the El Chaparral hydroelectric dam, which is 70 percent complete in construction, will begin operations in the year 2022.

To these are added two solar energy projects in the central departments of Cuscatlán and Cabañas with capacity of 8.5 megawatts, while three other wind initiatives will add 160 megawatts of energy from 2020.
