The first cities of the state of Rio de Janeiro enter into total confinement



Two cities in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro began total confinement on Monday to contain the advance of the coronavirus pandemic, which has already left more than 162,600 cases and 11,123 deaths in the country.

Niteroi and Sao Gonçalo became the first municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro to intensify the restrictive measures of traffic and circulation of people by decreeing the so-called "lockdown", which will be applied for an initial period of five days.

With these two municipalities in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region, there are already twenty Brazilian cities adopting a total blockade to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

The municipal government of Niteroi, the fourth city in the state with the most deaths from coronavirus (39), announced that the mobilization outside essential services will be punished with fines of up to 180 reais (about $ 33), which could be doubled in the event of recidivism. .

In the neighboring city of Sao Gonçalo, the "total closure of all non-essential establishments" and the prohibition on the population remaining in public places were also decreed.

The municipal authorities insisted that violators of the new measures may be held civilly, administratively and criminally liable, that is, they could be charged with the violation of a preventive health measure or for a crime of disobedience.

Behind Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro is the second state in Brazil most affected by the coronavirus, after having counted more than 17,000 cases and 1,714 deaths caused by the pathogen until this Sunday.

The capital of the same name, according to the latest balance, regionally leads the number of deaths (1,126) and cases (10,520) of the virus throughout the state.

In a press conference, the mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, announced on Monday more measures to restrict social isolation, which will be valid between May 12 and 18.

Among them, the prohibition of the circulation of cars in some regions of the city, the closure of non-essential shops, as well as bars and restaurants stand out.

Crivella added that face-to-face betting at lottery agencies will also be restricted, as will all works in the municipality that are not considered "emergency".

Also the Government of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, in the northeast of the country, reported this Monday on the extension of social isolation measures, starting next Saturday, in the cities of Recife, the regional capital, and neighboring Olinda, Jaboatao two Guararapes, Camarigibe and Sao Lourenço da Mata.

Although the regional authorities did not use the term "lockdown", the decree prohibits citizens of these regions from leaving the home without need.
