The European Medicines Agency recommends withdrawing six doses instead of five from each vial of Pfizer’s vaccine


The European Medicines Agency (EMA) this Friday updated the information on the Pfizer / BioNTech covid-19 vaccine to “clarify” that each vial of this drug actually contains enough doses to extract six injections, instead of the five recommended so far.

In order to obtain the full six doses, the EMA asks to use a “low dead volume” syringe (no more than 35 microliters) for extraction, and warns that “if standard syringes and needles are used, there may not be enough vaccine to extract a sixth dose from a vial ”.

This same Friday, the European Commission announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire an additional 300 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, doubling the number of doses already signed to vaccinate European Union citizens.

“We have agreed with BioNTech-PFizer to extend this contract to acquire 300 million doses,” of which 75 million will be distributed in the second quarter of the year, said the president of the EC, Ursula Von der Leyen in a press appearance.
