The EU, pending transparency in party financing in Paraguay

The head of the European Union (EU) follow-up electoral mission, Nicola Danti, said Wednesday that they are following with attention the financing of the political parties of Paraguay, within the recommendations issued after the 2018 general elections in this country.

"It is important that the political financing be clear, transparent, verifiable and punishable in case of violation of the rules," Danti said at a press conference at the end of the three-day visit to Paraguay.

On the recommendations of the EU, after the elections of April 2018 that led to the Presidency Mario Abdo Benítez, from the conservative Colorado Party, Danti talked about progress regarding previous elections.

"Personally I cannot speak of the degree of implementation of the recommendations, but obviously there is progress considering that in 2013, there were 49 points and now there were 20," said the European deputy, who was part of the electoral mission of the EU of 2018.

He also mentioned as an aspect to highlight the implementation of electoral access mechanism for people with disabilities.

"In most of the polling stations it was possible to verify compliance with the recommendations that were of the utmost importance so that people with disabilities could access the right to vote," said the parliamentarian.

On the use of electronic voting, scheduled for municipal elections next year in Paraguay, Danti said that this mechanism is not within the recommendations of the EU and that each country is free to choose the method.

"The important thing is to guarantee the correct functioning of the process in which the popular will can be reflected," he said.

This year Paraguay opted for electronic ballot boxes instead of traditional ballots and will be implemented in municipal elections on November 8, 2020.

The head of mission said that the participation of women in the process and elective positions is also another concern expressed in the recommendations, whose compliance will be observed in the general elections of 2013.

"This is an intermediate review," said Danti.
