The Spanish Meteorological Agency has communicated that starting this Monday a new DANA will enter the north of the peninsula, which will evolve into a cold storm over the following days. “As a consequence,” the Aemet warns, “a drastic change in the weather is expected from tomorrow, consisting of snow precipitations at relatively low levels in large areas of the peninsula, intense and persistent rainfall in the northwest peninsular quadrant, as well as a sharp drop in temperatures “.
The AEMET has activated the orange alert for snowfall in Aragon and in yellow in Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and the Community of Madrid. The agency indicates that the area most affected by the storm, and that this Monday will present snow levels at about 800-1000 meters, will be the Cantabrian mountain range, although snowfall is also expected in the Central and Iberian system and in lower areas in the south of Castilla y León, the northwest of Castilla-La Mancha and, occasionally, the Community of Madrid.
Tuesday will be “the peak day of the episode,” says Aemet. For that day a shift to the southeast is expected. The accumulation of snow will be more intense in the eastern areas of Castilla-La Mancha, Teruel, western Zaragoza, Soria and La Rioja, as well as in the central Pyrenees. They will continue in the Cantabrian mountain range and the Central system and it is likely that they will exceed 20 centimeters in thickness in the Iberian system.
412 snow plow
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has reported this Sunday that it has 412 snowplows and 57,214 tons of flux, within the Winter Road Plan, to face the snowfall that may occur in the communities of Aragon and Madrid during these days. In a note, the ministry asks that precautions be taken at the wheel and that the available information and recommendations be consulted, both from the General Directorate of Traffic and the Aemet.
For its part, Emergencias 112 Comunidad de Madrid has activated level 0 of the Winter Inclement Plan in the region this Sunday. It is a pre-emergency level that, depending on the evolution of the storm, may lead to the declaration of other levels. The Aemet has issued two notices for the community in the next few hours. The first begins at 6 in the morning on Monday and foresees snowfalls of up to five centimeters in the Sierra area. The second, from 6 pm, is extended to the entire region, with snowfalls up to two centimeters thick.
On Wednesday, although with greater uncertainty, snowfall will be likely in the same areas as on Tuesday, but less intensely and temperatures are expected to begin to rise in large areas in the middle of the week. On Thursday it is likely that the storm will recede towards the east and that it will be replaced by another from the north, so that the winter weather will continue, at least, until the weekend, according to the forecasts of the Aemet.
