The Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, announced on Monday that the 7% tax on generation of electric power will be valid as of next April. Last October, between the shock measures before the rise in the price of light, the Government approved a royal decree law to suspend the tax on electricity generation for six months, approved in 2012 by the Government of the PP. The Executive also approved an exemption in the special gas tax on hydrocarbons to deactivate the so-called green cent, which allowed the autonomous communities to impose a tax. Then, the Government estimated that the adoption of these measures to contain the rise in the price of electricity would have an impact on the receipt of around 4%.
On Monday, in statements to the press after participating in an event organized by the Elcano Royal Institute, Ribera said that the current government "does not have the capacity to maneuver" to do so, in reference to the electricity generation tax. The Minister of Ecological Transition considered that this measure is part of the basket of the update of the taxation of the energy system and said that it is one of the "two or three critical issues" that remain pending for a possible next term.
The return of the generation tax has raised some political debate. The PDeCAT insistently requested the Government during the month of February to extend the suspension of the tax with a new decree law. The Catalan deputy Carles Campuzano was the spearhead of this claim. And he reminded the government that if it did not, it would be "bad news for families and businesses"
Ribera added Monday that the government is working on this tax reform, although he pointed out that "it is very complex, since there is cross-taxation, which does not send clear signals and which requires an in-depth review of what is intended, what is it that can be done and how it is done in time ".
