The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through the Municipal Institute of Sports, has completed the comprehensive renovation of the Ortiz Wiot soccer field in The Batán, a work carried out through the company Hermanos García Álamo SL which includes both the replacement of the lawn as well as the creation of new stands and the improvement of access to the venue, investing a total of 972,191 euros in the project, reports Consistory on a note.
The mayor of the capital of Gran Canaria, Augusto Hidalgo, supervised the works today together with the Councilor for Sports, Aridany Romero, the manager and representative of the IMD workers, Leticia López, the president of the Club de Fútbol Atlético Fomento, David Santana, and the president of University FC, Julio Suárez, both representing the two sports entities that use the facility in their local matches for their youth teams and subsidiaries.
“With this work we respond to a historical demand of the residents, who did not have any type of proper stands in the enclosure to watch the games, in addition to improving the accessibility of the entire installation to respond to the new demands presented by the base sport “, explained the capital city councilor.
In this sense, Hidalgo recalled “the capital importance that this government has wanted to give to sport, not only as a health factor but also as a backbone and social cohesion element, especially among the youngest and especially in these times marked by the pandemic”.
For his part, the councilor and head of the IMD, Aridany Romero, indicated the intention of the municipal body to “create places of reference for the promotion of physical activity and sports in our city “, also remembering that the sports budget” has not stopped growing in the city since 2015, also aware of the generation of wealth and employment that it entails both for users and for clubs, companies and sector agents “.
“We have made a new soccer field, literally, where one already existed. It is true that it has nothing to do with the performance we have done,” said the Sports mayor. “Father, mothers, fans and users of the city’s grassroots sport now have a new facility that responds to the commitments made in this government,” he added.
The works of El Batán have been channeled into two actions that have been carried out in parallel: the first of them, the installation of a new synthetic surface of the latest generation for an amount of 380,344 euros.
In this way, the field now has a artificial grass 60 millimeters high, high resistance and low coefficient of abrasiveness, as well as anti-UVA fiber treatment resistant to heat and ice. At the same time, the current irrigation canyons have been renewed for others with similar conditions, as well as the conditioning of the surface of the perimeter corridors adjacent to the field.
In parallel, the Ortiz Wiot field has as of today some new covered stands, which with a budget of 514,638.62 euros, will enhance the security and accessibility of the facility, including in this intervention the adaptation of the free space to be able to access the bleachers area, located approximately four meters above the field, through two sections of 2 meter wide ramps, with an approximate capacity of 550 seated spectators.
The access of the public will be independent of that of the players, not crossing at any time within the enclosure of the plot. The changing room area has also been paved, as well as the refurbishment of the rest of the facility, investing 77,208.73 euros in this.
