The driver who ran over Landa tested positive for drugs

The driver who ran over the cyclist Mikel Landa and to a friend on Saturday morning was arrested after fleeing the place and has tested positive for the drug test. He remains detained in police departments, as confirmed by sources of the Ertzaintza.

The accident occurred at a quarter past one in the afternoon when Landa and a friend were riding a bicycle along the N-622 motorway as it passed through Zigoitia (Álava) towards Bilbao.

A Renault Megane ran over them and fled the place at high speed. Several witnesses alerted the Emergency Service to the emergency service, which sent health personnel to attend to the two victims, who were taken to the Santiago hospital by an ambulance.

The Ertzaintza began the search for the escaped vehicle and located it shortly thereafter near the toll road of the motorway in Altube.

Agents identified the driver and his companion, and arrested the first by verifying that Tourism had a damaged rearview mirror and that its remains coincided with others found at the scene of the accident.

The 42-year-old detainee was charged with a crime against road safety and Ertzaintza also investigates its possible involvement in an accident occurred hours before on the AP-1 motorway in Burgos, where, after hitting another vehicle, he would have fled in the direction of Vitoria.

Landa reported the incident through social networks. "This morning while training with a friend a car has rammed us from behind, running away. The first tests confirm that everything is fine," he said.

"I hope to return to training in the next few days," said Landa, who was not seriously injured.
