The Cuyás Theater will host this Wednesday, December 2, at 8:30 p.m., the premiere of the documentary ‘Pedro Lezcano: life story’, which includes a concert recorded by Olga Cerpa and Mestisay in this venue of the Cabildo Gran Canaria, Corporation that the poet author of ‘La suitta’ he presided between 1991 and 1995.
This was announced by the insular Minister of Culture, Guacimara Medina, during the presentation to the media, together with Cerpa and the founder of Mestisay, Manuel González, of the aforementioned project, whose musical performance was performed without an audience last October in the Cuyás main stage.
Produced by the Viera y Clavijo venue and directed by González, this work, which in turn is part of the program organized by the Cabildo to commemorate the first centenary of the poet’s birth and of which a preview can be seen in https://we.tl/t-aS448qlqQm, will be broadcast soon by Televisión Canaria.
The audiovisual (first long documentary by its director) incorporates, in addition to the concert recorded in the Cuyás, various testimonies and images related to the life and work of Lezcano (national and international historical moments, statements from friends and videographic recordings made in those places where he lived. or carried out most of its activity: the Osorio Estate, in Teror, Agaete, Fuerteventura, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brígida …). Among the rescued documents is part of the interview that Joaquín Soler Serrano did with the poet for the historic TVE program ‘A fondo’.
The filming, as well as the projection and broadcast of this documentary are part of a commemorative framework program organized, in recent months and by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, together with three previous proposals: the video-poem ‘De la amistad’, a series of interviews entitled ‘The poet in memory’ and a first concert, this one called ‘Concert for a poet’, held at the end of October in Santa Brígida, where the poet lived in his last years of life.
As in the concert recorded in the Cuyás, the recital of the Satauteño municipality was a journey through the most emblematic songs of the repertoire of Olga Cerpa and Mestisay, with songs by its director, Manuel González, inspired by Lezcano’s compositions. In addition, a piece was released based on individual verses from his collection of poems.
However, due to the limitations caused by Covid-19, only a hundred people were able to enjoy that performance. In this sense, both the screening of the documentary, this Wednesday, in Cuyás, and its subsequent broadcast on Televisión Canaria are great news, according to those responsible, who have had the collaboration of the videographic filmmakers Pedro Ruiz and Gino Maccanti and the editor Jacobo Barrera.
Mestisay, Olga Cerpa and Manuel González maintained a very close friendship with Lezcano and his family, a relationship that emerged after the premiere in the 80s of ‘Romance del Corredera’.
That collaboration was repeated with the first recorded version of the poem ‘La suitta’ and continued with the show ‘Versos para la vida’, in which, together with his musician friends, the poet recited his verses with such success that it even took them to work in other countries.
In addition, some of the most emblematic songs composed by González, such as ‘Sulema’ or ‘My little María’, are based on poems by Lezcano.
Two years after the death of this great intellectual, the island composer and producer scripted and produced for Mestisay ‘Poeta en la Isla’, a montage that the group premiered at the Cuyás Theater, which included the participation of Carlos Hipólito, Santiago, among others. Ramos and José Manuel Cervino, and that it was collected in a disk-book with the same title.
