The CUP has approved that Dolors Sabater, former mayor of Badalona, heads its lists for the February 14 elections. In an extraordinary Political Council held this Saturday, the bases of the training have endorsed the alliance with Guanyem Catalunya, a platform to which Sabater belongs.
The anti-capitalists have today taken a decisive but not definitive step for Sabater to be their candidate for the elections in Parliament. Now it will be Guanyem Catalunya who must endorse it, as well as the pre-alliance agreement reached with the CUP.
The bases of the CUP have validated the entente with 33 votes in favor, 26 against and 3 abstentions. “We want to [Sabater] lead this candidacy and will do it hand in hand with the best possible team ”, celebrated Maria Rovira, spokesperson for the formation.
Sabater, 60, is a teacher by training and was chosen as a candidate for the Guanyem Badalona en Comú change list in 2015 to become mayor. Thanks to a pact with the opposition, she served as mayor of the city until 2018, when a motion of censure from the PSC with the support of Ciudadanos and the PP removed her from office.
In the municipal elections of 2019, Sabater repeated as a candidate, but on that occasion she did not get the support to be mayor, but instead accepted ‘in extremis’ to support the PSC candidate to prevent Xavier Garcia Albiol from regaining the mayor’s office. With the resignation of socialist Álex Pastor for skipping confinement last May, the same agreement was not reached and the popular took the mayor’s stick.
