The covid-19 pandemic, the doubts that currently influence the planning of international travel and sanitary restrictions that continue to affect the holding of sporting events with such a long duration, from July 9-17, have caused the cancellation of the windsurfing world championship of Gran Canaria de la Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), for second consecutive Year. The hygienic and sanitary protocols necessary to ensure the safety of athletes, professional circuit judges, workers and windsurfers, during the nine days of the event, as well as the complex logistics required for their correct implementation, have been basic elements. for the Morenotwins Sports Club when making the difficult decision not to organize the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival.
To ensure that the championship is ‘Covid-19 Free’ they should be held PCRs test to the entire fleet, including junior runners, every 72 hours or create an airtight bubble, limiting movement and contact with anyone who is not participating in one way or another in the event. Both options require a high economic cost, as well as infrastructures, specifically enabled for the development of this sporting activity, which are unfeasible with the current budget and completely impossible to coordinate in an open and public space such as the El Arenal beach in Pozo Izquierdo.
A world championship with the best athletes
The continuous changes in restrictions to travel to Spain have generated a climate of uncertainty that does not guarantee the participation of the best foreign athletes, which would have been the 33rd edition of the Gran Canaria windsurfing World Cup in wave mode.
Australia, United States (Hawaii), Japan and many countries of the European continent include Spain in their list of destinations to which travel is not recommended, while the arrival of passengers from Brazil has been restricted by Spain since last February. This tortuous reality has directly impacted on the flow of flights that connect the world, making it increasingly complex and expensive to get to Gran Canaria from so far away.
Many of the best riders of the PWA come from countries with which there is no stable air connectivity with the Canary Islands and also have to cope with the instability caused by the new strains of the virus, such as india.
The regulation of health protocols, which requires negative tests to be submitted before boarding the plane or performing quarantines upon return from their place of origin, live in a continuous roller coaster driven by the appearance of mutations of the disease. Every day, we check how new border closures are announced, without prior notice, which increases the degree of uncertainty among athletes on the professional circuit when planning their trips.
El Arenal beach rehabilitation
Another factor that has influenced the evaluation process, carried out by the Morenotwins Sports Club, has been the plan to improve and modernize the stands that is being carried out on El Arenal beach, in Pozo Izquierdo. The setting in which the championship is usually held is one of the key points in the rehabilitation of the coastline of Santa Lucía, closing the way to the public area and limiting access to the sea.
The works began last April and is expected to last until October, so the hypothetical celebration of the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival it would coincide fully with the intermediate phase of the project.
The organization of the world windsurfing championship appreciates the support received from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, through the Gran Canaria Tourist Board and the Insular Institute of Sports of Gran Canaria, the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Promotur Turismo de Canarias and the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council and the commercial brands that have traditionally collaborated with the event, such as Grupo Anfi, Volkswagen Comerciales, Sonocom Audiovisuales, Meeting Point Hotels and Coca-Cola.
