The Electoral Board of the Official College of Physicians of Las Palmas decided last Thursday toto grant the candidacy of the board called Doctors for Change to the elections that, as the institution announced yesterday through its web portal, will be held on March 19. In this way, the process started in 2018 and that was contested by the group that leads Luis Miguel Pérez, who will compete at the polls for the presidency with the head of the collegiate body since 2006, the pulmonologist Pedro Cabrera. “The Board informed us that we were admitted on Thursday night. We are very satisfied and our conscience is clear because there are going to be elections, but we have been mistreated and despised without any just cause for a long time, ”said Pérez.
As the website reports, the more than 6,000 members of the province of Las Palmas will be able to exercise their right to vote during the aforementioned day, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. In Gran Canaria it will be the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium the scene of the call, while in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the space has not yet been confirmed.
Doctors who are outside their island may vote in any other of the province, while those who are in other destinations or on duty may do so on March 17 and 18, at any of the notaries assigned to each Island.
“It has been almost three years of intense struggle, but we have achieved our goal thanks to our perseverance,” celebrated the specialist in General and Community Medicine at the Arucas Health Center. And it is necessary to remember that the elections are resumed after the representative of Doctors for Change filed a judicial appeal on May 15, 2018 against the Electoral Board, which decided to invalidate his candidacy in the call of April of that same year . The determination was based on the differences between two of the rubrics of one of the components of the plate, those of José María Morán from Lanzarote, who also assured at all times that both signatures were his. Finally, on November 3, 2020, the Contentious-Administrative Court number 6 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria declared the process void and the directive did not resort to the sentence.
This newspaper tried to communicate yesterday with Pedro Cabrera to know his proposal for this new campaign, but due to scheduling reasons, it could not respond to the request. For its part, the opposition board is very clear that it will defend the renewal of the body so that doctors can feel protected and represented.
“For a long time, the doctors who come to the College have felt that they are not at home. There, some procedures are arranged, but when they are very complicated, balls are thrown out. The group always needs to have support to be able to move forward and defend their profession, and that is something we would like to contribute ”, advanced the specialist. “Primary Care also requires a total restructuring,” he continued, “and it must be the College” that leads this change.
How can these actions be carried out? Luis Miguel Pérez is committed to calling the unit. “You have to homogenize the profession. We want to build a path in which the different services are united and not each one goes on their own. Ideally, everyone defends their demands, but always moving in the same direction. This is something essential for us, “said the doctor.
