The Canary Islands touch the ‘red traffic light’ of coronavirus infections

One more day, Tenerife concentrated most of the new cases of coronavirus detected in the last 24 hours in the Canary Islands. The island brought together 73% of the infections in a single day, registering 87 of the 118 positive diagnoses reported in the Archipelago by the Ministry of Health. With these, there are already 6,392 cases of Covid-19 that accumulates the territory where yesterday there was also a death to be regretted to which another was added in Gran Canaria.

These last two deceased, both octogenarian men with previous pathologies, according to official sources, raise the island’s number of deaths to 285. In contrast, 36 people were discharged, with 11,314 who have overcome the disease in the region since start of the pandemic.


Even so, 5,865 citizens are still affected by the virus in the autonomous community. Of these, 39 are admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ucis) and 176 remain admitted to the hospital ward. The rest of those affected by the pathogen recover in their homes where they receive medical control.

Regarding infections by islands, Gran Canaria has a total of 8,694 cases of coronavirus, adding another 25 in the last day. It also maintains 2,194 active cadres of which 1,935 are concentrated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . The capital is the municipality with the highest number of positive diagnoses in the entire Archipelago, since 32% of Covid-19 patients in the entire region are agglutinated in its territory. Even so, Tenerife is the island that leads the increase in cases that already reach 6,392. Santa Cruz is 470 contagions from its Gran Canaria counterpart, with 1,465 active cases –24% of the autonomous total-; also closely followed by La Laguna, where 1,173 people are still affected by SARS-CoV-2.

Lanzarote did not add any positive diagnosis in the last hours, so its total number of infections remains at 1,235 and the people who continue to be ill are 69. A score of fewer coronavirus patients have Fuerteventura, where last day another four were notified cases that raise the island’s general count to 770.

La Palma was also diagnosed with a new case of coronavirus with which there are 195 since the health crisis began. There, four people are still facing the virus. La Gomera also registered a contagion on the last day, for which there are already a total of 93, of which 11 remain active. Finally, El Hierro has 66 accumulated cases, not adding any yesterday, and four active. In the Canary Islands, 490,904 PCR tests have been carried out to date, 3,010 in the last 24 hours.

In total, 22,085 have had a positive result, which represents a 4.5% contagion in the sampling in the Archipelago, touching the 5% in which the WHO places the ‘red traffic light’ of infections. The Islands continue with a Cumulative Incidence (AI) of 32.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days, and 74.34 in the last two weeks, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health.
