The summit of the C40 Climate Leadership Group closed this Saturday in Copenhagen after four days in which it has brought together representatives from more than 90 cities and other political, business and scientific leaders, as well as activists.
These are the five main commitments adopted at the meeting, whose official closing ceremony was held yesterday:
1. NEW GREEN COVENANT
Almost a hundred cities pledged to promote actions so that the increase in global temperature at the end of the century does not exceed 1.5 degrees through a global green pact that recognizes the urgency of the situation.
The agreement aims to reduce emissions in the most polluting sectors: transport, industry, construction and waste treatment.
2. FAVOR A HEALTHY DIET
Fourteen cities, including Barcelona or Lima, agreed to apply by 2030 a set of policies that stimulate a healthier and more sustainable diet among its inhabitants, with which to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
The declaration is committed to reducing waste, giving priority in public purchases to organic products and balanced and nutritious foods, and making that purchase accessible to its citizens.
3. IMPROVE AIR QUALITY
About thirty cities in Copenhagen committed themselves to improving the quality of air their inhabitants breathe, which together exceed 140 million, with the implementation of policies in this regard by 2025.
The signatories acknowledged that breathing pure air is a human right and intends to avoid 40,000 annual deaths due to air pollution through measures such as the expansion of transport with low or zero emissions, promoting cleaner heating and cooking fuels and encouraging the use of the bicycle .
4. CLEAN CONSTRUCTION
Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm agreed to promote regulations and design policies to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the construction sector.
A report released at the summit indicates that building and infrastructure emissions could be reduced by 44% in 2050 by improving the efficiency of material design, replacing high-emission materials with sustainable wood, using low-emission cement and reusing components.
5. COLLABORATION WITH YOUNG ACTIVISTS
The C40 group of cities, made up of 94 large cities, announced the creation of a global initiative for youth that allows cooperation between mayors and leaders of climate movements around the world with the aim of promoting the new global green pact.
