The news of the 23rd edition of the DRAE can also be glossed into very specific figures: 1,100 modifications, among which there are 229 additions and 88 additions of meaning. The new lexicon comes from different areas of knowledge and development, such as computer science and technology, science or marginal or vulgar language. But the news also has an impact on the dictionary and this can be seen particularly with climate change, whose emergence in the media has brought the dissemination of a terminology that was not so commonly used, as can be seen with the introduction of “ arboricide. " But there are other terms that have attracted the attention of academics, such as "midfielder", which comes from sports, or "beatlemania", coming from music, a word that, as explained by Paz Battaner, director of the DLE, belongs to a group of lexicon that, because of its formation, “the academy does not yet have a solution adopted. But in the precise case of "beatlemania," which has adapted so quickly to Spanish, there has been no problem. "Mani" comes from our language, that is why we have treated this word as proper to the language. "

Another peculiarity that has attracted attention is the inclusion of “Zasca”, very widespread in the comics and, above all, in social networks, and which Battaner himself also wanted to explain: “What attracts her attention is that it has the Spain brand, because its use is restricted to our country ”. To this list we must also add other very widespread and commonly used terms, such as "Antitaurino", "test", "birthday", "identity", "panhispanism", "border", "schedule", " casteller ”or“ casoplón ”.

As Santiago Muñoz Machado, director of the RAE, stressed in the presentation of the updates of the dictionary, it has not yet been admitted “microfonar”, which is widely used in the media, but they have incorporated into the glossary of Spanish pure foreignness , who have not yet found accommodation in Spanish. The most striking news in this section are: "Penthouse", "brioche", "brunch". On the latter, Paz Battaner said: "Sometimes there are two or three ways to enter terms in the dictionary, because they are reflected in the form of raw foreignisms, but they can also come in italics, which is the case of" brioche. " That depends on two things: one of the meanings is closer to pronunciation and the other, to spelling. ”

Regarding the chapter on modifications, the addition of the capital letter "H" to "Holocaust" in one of its meanings and the suppression of the etymology in the word "etarra", a decision that was tried to explain yesterday, is striking. “We could not put our hand to all the etymologies of the words of the DRAE. It is a question that I liked to point out, because within Spanish this suffix in "rro" and "rra", which belongs to a pre-Roman etymology. It is doubted whether it is purely Basque or Iberian, which is a language that is transcribed, but not understood too much. Like all languages ​​that live together, these two became contaminated. The speakers link this word to the Basque Country, but there the term used is “abertzale”, not Etarra. It seems that this is a formation that comes from outside the Basque Country and we don't know who formed it. ”

Santiago Muñoz Machado, who was accompanied at the event by Paz Battaner, director of the DLE, and Raquel Montenegro, director of the Guatemalan Academy of Language, advanced that the next edition, the 24th, will present great news about its predecessor, “until the point that we can call revolutionary, because it is very ambitious as approaches. Surely that dictionary will be seen exclusively on the network, but the SAR resists not having a printed volume. There are 23 progressive editions of this work.
