The Basque Minister of Health, Gotzone Sagardui, has asked the Government of Pedro Sánchez at the telematic meeting of the inter-territorial Health Council, which was held this Wednesday, to “adapt” the current framework of the state of alarm “to enable the possibility of decree house confinements “like those of March. According to sources from the Basque Executive, “the Ministry of Health has responded that this option will be studied.”
Euskadi warns of an imminent increase in healthcare pressure after a day that touches the record for infections and with the ICU at 38%
Although the Government of Iñigo Urkullu advocates “avoiding” the scenario of last spring for its consequences of “economic coma” and also “emotional”, for several days he has been opening the door ajar and sending messages of calculated ambiguity. This Thursday the lehendakari will once again meet the crisis table of the health emergency to analyze the latest data from the pandemic -which point to an increasing tension in hospitals- and the effectiveness of the measures applied in the Basque Country within the framework of the state of alarm, basically municipal confinements and the entire autonomous community, a curfew from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and a ban on meetings of more than six people.
Urkullu has already verbalized that he has other, tougher measures in mind – which could be to suspend presence at the University or limit more hospitality hours or even closure – but now he opens the door to harsh confinement. It refers to seeking legal security to apply it “immediately” but only “if it becomes necessary.” It proposes that it be available on demand for the autonomous communities, as delegated authorities for the management of this second state of alarm. The Basque Country has also consulted Minister Salvador Illa about the possibility of making the autonomic capacity of the curfew more flexible. According to the Basque side, the Ministry sees no margin beyond the option given to move it an hour before or after 11:00 p.m.
