The Barcelona metropolitan area asks the army for help

Some of the main towns in the Barcelona metropolitan area have embraced the proposal of the central government to request the support of the military emergency unit (UME) and they have already required their presence to disinfect risk areas in order to get rid of the “sources of contagion”.

The Government Delegation in Catalonia He manages the formal requests of the Catalan town councils that want to receive help from the army EMU, requests that he immediately forwards to the Ministry of Defense. According to the sources consulted, said department studies each case to plan the help requested, in terms of the necessary human and material resources and the suitability of the places.

Yesterday, the second most populous city in Catalonia, l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, was one of the towns that formally requested this help from the army, as well as Badalona and Sabadell, the main town of Vallès, or Barberà del Vallès, a list that has been added this Tuesday Sant Boi de Llobregat.

L’Hospitalet, Badalona, Sabadell, Barberà del Vallès and Sant Boi have asked for help for cleaning and disinfection

It so happens that, for now, all the municipalities that have requested the Government delegate in Catalonia, Teresa Cunillera, the help of the army are governed by the socialists. For its part, the Government has indicated this Tuesday at the press conference after the executive council meeting that the Health Department does not consider it necessary to activate the armed forces in Catalonia for this task.

Sources from the l’Hospitalet City Council have explained that the aid requested from the army focuses, above all, on the cleaning and disinfection from the vicinity of hospitals, as well as on public transport in the city. The aforementioned sources have recalled that l’Hospitalet has some of the most important healthcare centers in Catalonia, also in terms of its ability to care for patients, such as the Bellvitge, the Duran i Reynals and the Red Cross. Disinfecting public transport is also another of the city’s priorities, whose northern neighborhoods such as Pubilla Cases, La Torrassa or Collblanc are the ones that have the highest population density per square meter across Europe.

In Badalona is the hospital Can Ruti, so that here too the municipal authorities have asked that the surroundings of both this health center and the local Municipal hospital be disinfected, as they are considered a focus of spread of coronavirus.

For its part, the Sabadell City Council has also requested the help of the army to disinfect the vicinity of the hospital Taulí Park from the city, a health center that cares for all patients in the region, but also, unlike the other two towns, requires the sending of health personnel.

Unlike the municipalities of L’Hospitalet and Sabadell, the one in Badalona has also requested help for the residences and civic centers for the elderly, although other populations, although they do not contemplate it for now, admit that the situation can change in a matter of hours or days.

In addition to these municipalities in the province of Barcelona, the Tarragona town of Constantí or the Síndic de Val d’Aran, Fracesc Boya, have also formally requested the help of the army
