Spain received the visit of a million international tourists in October, 86.6% less than in the same month of 2019, as a result of the pandemic and outbreaks, which led some countries to adopt new restrictions on travel, according to data published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
With the strong setback in October, eight consecutive months of decreases in the number of touristss internationals visiting Spain.
The INE has also reported that the expenditure made by foreign tourists reached 862 million euros in October,figure 89.7% lower than that of the same month of 2019. Average spending per tourist stood at 845 euros in the tenth month of the year, with an annual decrease of 22.9%, while average daily spending fell 34.6%, to 105 euros.
During the first ten months of 2020, the total expenditure made by international tourists fell by 77.3%, to 18,577 million euros. This is due to the fact that between January and October only 17.9 million international tourists visited Spain, 76.1% less than in the same period in 2019.
France, main issuing country
In October, France was the main country of residence, with 381,857 tourists, which represents 37.5% of the total and a decrease of 57.2% compared to October last year. The United Kingdom and Germany follow with more tourists than visited Spain, contributing 148,540 tourists (91.0% less in the annual rate) and 82,509 tourists (92.7% less), respectively.
With regard to the main emitting countries so far this year, France (with more than 3.6 million tourists and a decrease of 63.6% compared to the first 10 months of 2019) was also ranked first place, followed by the United Kingdom (with almost 3 million, a decrease of 81.8%) and Germany (with about 2.3 million tourists, 77.7% less).
Catalonia, main destination in October
Catalonia was the main destination for tourists in October, with 230,580 tourists (22.6% of the total), followed by the Valencian Community, with 176,971 (17.4% of the total) and Andalusia, with 143,378 (14, 1% of the total).
86.2% less arrived in Catalonia than in October last year, while in the Valencian Community the number of tourists decreased by 79.7% and in Andalusia by 88%. In the rest of the communities, the number of tourists fell by 88% in the Canary Islands, 93.1% in the Balearic Islands and 94.7% in the Community of Madrid.
In the accumulated of the first 10 months of 2020, the communities that received the most tourists were Catalonia (with more than 3.7 million and a decrease of 78.5% compared to the same period in 2019), the Canary Islands (with slightly more than 3, 4 million and a decrease of 68.3%) and Andalusia (with almost 2.6 million, 76.1% less).
Arrival by air
The airport road was the one that served as the entrance to the largest number of tourists in October, with 542,263, which means an annual decrease of 91.6%, while 51.2% fewer tourists arrived by road, 96.6% less by port and 74% less by rail.
Regarding accommodation, the number of tourists who used market accommodation as their main accommodation mode in October decreased by 90.8% in the annual rate, cincreasing hotel accommodation by 91.4% and housing for rent 89.2%.
On the other hand, non-market accommodation decreased by 64.3%, with a 71.5% decrease in tourists staying in the home of family or friends and 49.3% in those staying in home ownership.
The duration of the majority stay among tourists in October was from four to seven nights, with 410,185 tourists and an annual decrease of 88.7%, while the number of visitors fell by 51.8% among those who did not stay overnight (hikers) and by 72.4% among tourists with a longer duration (more than 15 nights).
