The Army helps in 73 nursing homes and will patrol with the Civil Guard



The military helps on Monday in 73 homes for the elderly affected by the coronavirus and are present in 149 localities in disinfection and assistance tasks in homeless centers and field hospitals, while working to create joint patrols with the Civil Guard.

The head of the Defense General Staff (JEMAD), Miguel Villarroya, has informed in the daily press conference after the technical committee against the coronavirus that this Monday 2,550 soldiers of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the three armies they are working to fight the pandemic.

Asked about the members of the Armed Forces who are on the streets these days and have been infected by it, the general has not given figures: “Only to tell them that we have people affected by the coronavirus, but it does not affect operations at all, and let me leave it there, “he said.

One of the tasks they carry out this Monday is the disinfection of essential service facilities, such as the train stations of San Sebastián, Vitoria and Bilbao, the airports of the latter city, Seville and Alicante, and the ports of Malaga, Valencia and Castellón.

The military also continue to help transfer patients from hospitals to medicalized hotels in Madrid and the general has reported that this Monday an UME team and a disinfection module will be transported to the Canary Islands.

Villarroya explained that his work at Ifema is, on the one hand, maintaining the emergency camp for 150 homeless people and, on the other hand, helping to set up a 5,500-bed field hospital coordinated by the Community of Madrid.

At the Fira de Barcelona, ​​the same scheme is being followed as in Madrid and for now the military is collaborating in the construction of a reception center for homeless people at the request of the Barcelona City Council, which will decide whether also count on the Armed Forces to set up a field hospital there.

Another of the fronts on which the Army works is to develop a joint patrol scheme with the Civil Guard to monitor streets and highways, JEMAD explained, and also manufacture medicines.

The latter is being done by the Colmenar Viejo (Madrid) Military Pharmacy Center, which was already activated in the influenza A crisis, when it manufactured vaccines, and is now producing hydrogel, paracetamol, sivavirin and a “coronavirus inactivating solution” at the request of the CNB-CSIC National Biotechnology Center, which is working on a vaccine.

Villarroya recalled that, as announced the day before, this Monday the members of the Royal Guard join the fight against the virus, “once again showing that his majesty the king is the first soldier in Spain”.

The general emphasized in his appearance that “very hard moments are still awaited”, he asked the citizens to continue at home because “one more day of effort results in saving lives” and he thanked the health and medical personnel for their work nursing homes, which demonstrate a value that “is no longer assumed, they have it accredited.”
