The annual meeting of the Chinese National People’s Congress will be on May 22

The annual meeting of the Chinese National People’s Congress (ANP, Parliament), which was postponed on February 24 as a result of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, will be held on May 22, the state agency reported today. from Xinhua News.

The decision was made today by the ANP Standing Committee, which has met for the past three days in Beijing to set a date for the appointment and to discuss the issues that the assembly will address.

The ANP annual session, which usually gathers around 3,000 delegates from all over the country at the People’s Palace in Beijing, usually lasts for ten days and establishes the main economic and political objectives of the year.

The announcement of the call is of special symbolic importance since it represents the return to the political normality of the country when most of the countries of the world are still focused on the fight against the pandemic.

The ANP, in which the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and the senior staff of the country’s leadership participate, had been postponed this year for the first time in decades and its new date was expected as a definitive sign of a return to normality. Although many restrictions against the disease are still in force.

Among other things, the ANP normally sets the Chinese economic growth target for the current year, something that it is not yet clear that it will do this time due to the uncertainty about the evolution of the country’s economy due to the effects of the pandemic. , both nationally and globally.

The effects of the coronavirus have caused a contraction of 6.8% of the Asian giant’s GDP in the first quarter of 2020, the first drop since 1976.

Forecasts for the year as a whole by international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are still 1.2% growth, while others even speak of 3%.

If the ANP finally sets a growth target this year, it will be evaluated as a sign of a decision by the Beijing authorities in favor of a policy of greater or lesser economic stimulus.

The annual meeting, which usually lasts at least ten days, also sets Defense, Education and other important political and social objectives, including a draft of a new Civil Code.

The Chinese People’s Consultative Conference, an advisory body that meets regularly for a week in parallel to the ANP, will do so this time on May 21, the state news agency said.
