The AECIO Optimist Trophy, one of the most traditional events on the RC Náutico de Gran Canaria test calendar, closes the nautical activity of the year with its 35th edition. The event will start next Sunday and will run until Tuesday 29, bringing together around a hundred young sailors in the bay of the capital of Gran Canaria.
In this edition, despite the mobility restrictions marked in other countries, there will be representation from countries such as France and England, as their athletes advanced their trip to Gran Canaria to enjoy the weather and its unbeatable winter sailing conditions.
The Spanish fleet will have the presence of competitors from five autonomous communities, the most numerous being the Canary Islands with sailors Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, since from Tenerife, despite having registered several athletes, they will not sail as they cannot scroll through the latest publication regulations regarding the pandemic. Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Murcia complete the bulk of a fleet that has been training for several days in the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
“Despite being an atypical competition, due to the circumstances in which we currently find ourselves, we are fortunate that the sport of sailing is developed completely outdoors and in the case of the Optimist, individually”, comments Ana Llaca, responsible for this class in the organizing club. “All participants have presented a negative PCR to be able to enroll,” he adds.
