Don Pasquale, by Donizetti narrates the plot between the young and smiling Norina and her lover Ernesto to get his uncle, Don Pasquale, to abandon their marriage expectations. Verdi's A Masquerade Ball takes place after the 1792 assassination of King Gustaf III of Sweden who was shot, as a result of a political conspiracy, while attending a masquerade ball. Ernani, also by Verdi, recounts how there is an old enmity between the Habsburgs and the Dukes of Aragon.
